...kind of a sidebar, but at what torque did your Exedy Twin slip?

Oh! and pics would be good.

The clutch was relatively low mileage and not much hard usage. Then I got my new setup tuned which was a 2.4 + 35R. Don't have a dyno here though. The tuner estimated I think about 600 ft/lbs torque on race fuel if I recall correctly.

We went to the track for the first time a few weeks ago. We wanted to take it very easy as I've broken a lot of gearboxes and transfer cases lately. Ran an 11.0 first pass with 1.9 60 ft granny shifting. Then ran an 11.0 again with 1.9 60 ft, but this time the clutch slipped when shifting 5th near the end of the 1/4.

We let the car cool down for about 30 min, then made a 3rd and final pass. Car ran a 10.9 and the clutch didn't slip this time around. 1.8 60 ft and still not flat shifting, also lifting early at the end.

Let me upload the pics about my friends ATS triple now...

Ok I went over to friends house last night to check it out. I'm interested in all this because I have a brand new ATS triple sitting here at home that I bought for future use and am now worried about using it. For sure I won't use it without a scatter shield now.

Here are the pics. I forgot to get some pics of the mashed up turbo. If you recall from my original post, a large piece of the bell housing tore through the silicone couple on the turbo intake and mashed up the compressor blades real good.

Pics below:

Were all the bolts still in the clutch? Could it be they come loose then when they fell out the basket exploded.

The bolts where tq down right its that simple. You have to go around a few time before installing. The few people a i know that have the clutch said they went over the bolts from 6-10 times top insure it was done right one guy has 8k miles countless passes no problem at all.

Since the flywheel and clutch hat are in place but the ring broke, It looks to me like the bolts came out or broke off. The remnants of the ring will tell the story. If all the bolts are broken off inside, the bolts failed. If there are at least a couple empty holes then the bolts came loose first so it is not the fault of the clutch.

I'll try to find out the answers to those questions guys.

But let me ask, when installing this clutch, you'd never have to touch the bolts holding the basket would you?

Get a clue my friend. This clutch failure I'm posting about was a friend of a friends. I didn't install the clutch. I'm posting this thread cuz I'm curious why it failed as I have a brand new ats triple sitting here waiting to go in my evo.

So your "wow" comment makes no sense.

On top of that, and I'm no expert but, I'm pretty sure the bolts holding the basket to the flywheel do not need to be touched from looking at the clutch. Am I right? (not asking you jmartinez)

FYI

I asked and they said definitely the bolts holding the basket to the flywheel sheared. I'd have taken a pic but I think the pieces of basket are off to ATS to have a looksy.

Another friend with Evo 9 has had his Carbonetics triple EXPLODE. I'll try to get some pics. This is a friend of mine with Full-Race twin scroll GT40 and 2.3 IX RS running Halltech. Apparently this time it has totallly destroyed the gearbox not just the bell housing!

This is a DIFFERENT car to the first failure I reported in this thread.

The first failure I reported was another friend of a friend with a 2 litre Evo 9 and Innovate turbo on a Full-Race mani.

I will concede that, to have this happen to two people I know, without every seeing a post about it elsewhere, that something suspicous might be happening. Maybe mechanic doing something wrong? Hard to say. The two friends do use the same mechanic.

I'll post some pics once I get them.
