tuning issue messed up piston?
hi. figured i'd try here to see if you aem guys could help me out...:
back story that might be important:
apr 30th 09:
two nights ago i had the inkling to take off my intake tosee if it is clean. i look in and there is a small pool of oil where the "sleeve" holds the intake pipe onto the turbo. i don't think that's normal so i take a rag and try to sop it up. i don't hit the turbo or anything.
today on the way back from work after 20miles, i get to the exit and it starts sounding rough and conks out at idle. i get it to the gas station and check it out and call my mech - we go over a couple things. check the aem with my laptop and it appears to be getting all sensors, etc. just rough idle and can't rev at all (real rough and shakey). smoke comes out the exhaut that is whiteish when reving. I have another friend call a mech friend of his. he says he had the same turbo on his 4 cyl mustang (pt 61mm) and they have been having seal and/or bearing problems causing oil to get sucked in and cause problems. i take the intake off again and it looks like there is more oil in there and it is moving around alot when i rev and at idle and might sound like it is hitting the bades of the turbo. this doesn't have a ton of miles! what is my next step??? thanks

ok, so update...the motor is apart and my guy called and said that the one piston is fubar..what would cause this?? it was at lowish boost and not too much timing he says and is blaming it on a bad piston (he might have said all the pistons are shot on his msg, but couldn't really tell, but i think it would have drove worse if all were f-dup.). he says he is going to send it to the machine shop (i guess to clean it up), and we'll go from there. i am going to try to attach the aem map to see if anyone spots any issues...thanks

dude. who tuned your car? these maps are whack! i wouldnt say your timing is too high. more like too low! like 10-15 degrees less than stock. your egt's had to be high as all hell.

Without seeing the whole cal file, it is difficult to guess as to what the issue could be. The 2 screen shots you posted are pretty cookie cutter and the fuel map is not much different from the base cal file. The timing map doesn't look that out of order. Again though, too many other things it could be without seeing the whole story.

as mentioned before, seeing the whole cal will be helpful..
who's to say that your map sensor extension harness isnt flaking, giving a drop out in boost signal for example, which would take fuel away & give you more ignition when you wouldnt need it....
do you have the internal log data, prior to your engine coming apart?

If you were sucking oil in through the turbo into the engine, that oil in the combustion chamber could cause hot spots leading to detonation. And as we all know, detonation can lead to engine failure...rods, bearings, pistons, etc. On my wrx I had a similar issue with oil from a failed seal in the turbo which I believe eventually lead to engine failure. Thankfully I had a back up engine that I was already planning on building.
Also, just out of curiosity how much oil was in the intake on the pre-turbo side and how much did you see post turbo, like in the intercooler piping? If all the oil was on the pre-turbo side, that could be from the crankcase vents. Still the same result though, but at that point, it was not the seals on the turbo that caused the issue.

i didn't check post turbo..just a little oil in the "dip" where the "sleeve" slides on the turbo. before this happened, like for several hundred miles, it felt normal - pleanty of power. then while coming off the interstate, it just went wierd with the plug stuff. no "hard" driving. just a steady like 80mph...then wuuuuupupupupu

Sounds like if it is pre-turbo it is blowby. It does not sound like a turbo going bad. I mean you could have both I guess. I would get yourself a good catch can and install it right before the vent goes into the intake.
That engine build sounds like your standard 2.3 build.
So did you have the car dyno tuned? Do you have a wide band o2 sensor in your car. Also in your cal, you should check to see if knock control was active.
It looks like that map was only tuned up to 13.43psi(192kpa).
I would say that you need a PSI gauge and Wide Band in the car if you dont have one. I would also set up your ecu to always log, then you could pull the logs off the ecu when something bad happens. If you are not very confortable in the EMS Software sell the EMS and go back to a stock flashed ecu. Mellon Tuning is making like 600+ on the stock ecu with flash and the stock maf.

yes it was dyno tuned (as well as driven). i do have all standard gauges. yes there were wot runs. i had someone else look at the cal (because i don't know how to post it up on here) and they said knock control was off.
