Base Timing

I was wondering when setting the base timing in the AEM, and you are reading the timing off the crank at TDC at idle, what kind of numbers are you guys seeing? I am using a Snap-On timing light which gives out a digital reading and it is reading around 40degrees of timing at TDC. Does this sound right? Sorry if this is a dumb question but i am somewhat new to this whole stand alone ECU stuff.

I tried checking my base timing last week with a brand new snap-on timing light and the light was flashing wayy to quick, I think this is due to the wasted spark firing of the evo ignition the gun would pick up both firings of the cylinder#1 plug, one at TDC on compression stroke and TDC of the exhaust stroke. We swapped to an old *** craftsmand timing light and it was flashing substantially slower, I think if your reading was really 40 degrees, the car car wouldnt even run correctly. Sorry I cant provide more feedback on this, I never really got mine "Set" I still need to mess with it a bit.

If you're stilling having problems, watch this video:

Most AEM ignition maps I've seen shoot for 20 degrees advanced at idle to achieve a nice smooth, stable idle. Especially if you have fairly large cams.

DO NOT sure any dialback guns. cheesey timing lights ONLY! let the car warm up, go to options,go to ecu setup, ignition setup. set the fixed timing at 10 and check the box. this forces the timing to 10 degrees. then check with a timing light to make sure its 10 degrees. press the + or - button to advance or retard until you see 10 with the timing light. this is called "syncing" timing and this is very important. all this info can also be found in the AEM PRO instructions.

you should have 15-20 degrees at idle btw.....
