As for the trigger discs, there are several other applications that have switched to a 12-tooth crank trigger and had better starting. Although I've never had an AEM tech confirm this, there is evidence that the AEM runs off an internal "12-tooth" crank trigger strategy and any application that does not have a 12-tooth crank trigger, the EMS has to calculate in software to simulate the 12-tooth strategy.

This means the processor is tied up doing this "interpolation" trying to predict where the teeth are. If you can just give it the 12-tooth signal it really wants, it makes it easier on the processor and more accurate.
