ECU Offline, cannt connect
I can't get my laptop to connect to the aem ems series 1. I have the radioshack usb to serial cable with the correct driver installed. I tryed reinstalling both the driver and aempro with not luck. I disconnected the battery for 30min. Ive tryed every combination of key possitions, and turning the key to on after I hit connect. I have the correct com port selected in aempro. It will just flash ECU OFFLINE . Any idea?

1) After a clean reboot, get windows all loaded up and then plug in your USB to Serial converter.
2) Open up AEMPro, click "Work Offline"
3) Go to ECU | Connection Port and be sure Serial is selected and in the drop-down box select your USB to Serial converter. Click OK.
4) Turn the Ignition Key to ON and within 5 seconds click ECU | Connect (or Shift + F7)
If you have your EMS configured for a Serial Gauge, it gives you a short period of time to connect (I think it's less than 10 seconds) before it tries to find a Serial Gauge. Once that timeout is reached you cannot connect to the EMS. If you always try to connect immediately after Key On, you shouldn't have this problem.
If after this and you've checked all the COM port settings, different USB to Serial Cable, etc.
If you've gone down all other troubleshooting avenues, it may need to go back to AEM for a bench test. I've seen PROM chips go bad before, but it's pretty rare.

Also and most importantly, when you go under "connection port" and hit the drop down menu in the box your cable name should appear and you select it. IF and when you can select your cable here the laptop will connect to the aem. If your cable name is not in the drop down menu then you have a driver/laptop issue. In the rare case you can select your cable but it does not connect then replace the cable.

Thanks for the replies.
I just tryed everything posted. It does list the cable by its name in AEM. I also tryed differnt baud rates.
I do have windows 7, Im wondering if the radioshack cable isnt compatable even tho it says its "ready for use".

What windows version did you select for the driver install? Theres no windows 7 option, atleast in the driver download from the radioshack website. Which is where I download the driver from sense I dont have the disc.

Get you a differnt cable man. I use windows 7 and always download drivers for vista if windows 7 version is not available. My cable is a Gigaware and does not use a disc for the drivers. It has a small box on the end of the cable that i guess holds the driver info so a software download is not needed. Simply plug it in, it does its thing, it works. Mine was that simple! Now when i do have an issue connecting, which happens from time to time, i uninstall all my usb drivers under device hardware, restart the laptop, plug my cable in, select my port under "connection port" and thats it. Thsi has worked many times for me. Get you a cable like mine that holds the drivers.....
When you say its name is AEM, what do you mean? It should say the brand of you cable, like gigaware or radio shack...

2 things just try another cable first. I use both cables that are mentioned, gigaware and radioshack. Both work without issues with windows 7. My radioshack one just stopped working period. My pc recognizes it but ecu doesnt.
Lastly. Sounds dumb but unplug the box from the harness and plug it back in and try right away. There's one 2j car that I have to do that with everytime I need to connect to it

There are some windows 7 adapters that are known goods.
The other thing you can try is break out the multimeter and start testing for a good +12v.
