EMS good enough for 100% daily driver? Has anyone tuned with an iPad?
EMS good enough for 100% daily driver? Has anyone tuned with an iPad?
Hi Everyone,
After doing a lot of research, I think I'm gonna go with a 2nd gen EMS for engine management. However, I have some concerns about drive ability. I have a 1st gen EMS in my 2G DSM, and love it except for the following issues.
The car is 100% daily driven, so I can't have any reliability issues. I know that there's a ton of threads about reliability, but I'm wondering, overall, (with a good tuner) can I have it run better than stock in every way or will there be some compromise?
Tuning with an iPad:
For me, the biggest downside is needing a laptop because of mounting it and having so much glare that you can barely read the screen. I want to be able to tune anytime, but I don't want a huge laptop that's always in the way, so here's what I think I'm gonna do:
Has anyone tried this before? I think it should be a pretty easy setup to make...
Thanks for the help!

- Car dies sometimes when accelerating and letting off gas in neutral.
- Seems to have trouble idling with the AC on.
- Trouble starting (the usual EMS issue)

- Wireless router in the trunk (either a standard one or a hotspot. A hotspot could allow someone else, like a shop, to remotely connect to your PC from anywhere in the world and tune it while you drive)
- Laptop (with solid state hard drive) in the trunk connected to the EMS with serial/USB
- iPad in passenger compartment (maybe mounted) that uses wifi to remote into the trunk mounted laptop. Because it uses wireless, you could tune from anywhere within the router's range, so you could easily tune while standing in front of the car with the hood open (maybe to adjust idle or dyno tune)
Has anyone tried this before? I think it should be a pretty easy setup to make...

as far as the electronics part i will be no help to you seems like you kno what you want the audio section is a better spot for those questions but for your ems questions yes the aem v2 will stat sync faster its instant like the stock ecu the ac issue and stalling can all be fixed with a good tune.
All that for ipad... Idk...
Have it tuned properly by a tuner, and u can drive it all day.
Daily reliability is more of a drivetrain component issue like twindisks and such.
Any standalone is more than capable of being operating a daily driven racecar if tuned by a tuner with knowledge ofthe system

Hey bro,
Never tuned using an Ipad but as far as driveability goes it is difficult to setup to run like a stock tune. I have played with my tune for about 5 years and have dialed it in pretty good. I do use my car daily but I would say it is not stock driveability but close...
In regards to the problem of stalling when letting off the gas a number of items can cause that. I had the same problem at one time but had to dial in the idle control motor. It's a little tricky but once done correctly it works pretty good. Also depending if you are SD or maf tuned another area to look at is fuel in the area where it is stalling...

Man at some points I feel the same way. Very disappointing on the daily drivability tune. The stalling issues are very frustrating. Unfortunately I do not tune in order to fix the tune while daily driving it. At some point my Evo dies when turn ON the fog lamps! Regarding the iPad I dont think the AEM and iPad are compatible. (?)

Perfectly said. All your issues you are having is lack of good tuning

my car starts/drives/idles great. This is on e85 as well.
I run a v1 AEM on my 03 which is a bolt on car (evo 9 turbo, kelford 272, BR IC, ported ex mani). It runs great and I have no real issues just the takes a moment extra to start but thats just the nature of the v1. No stalling issues or cutting out. It was tuned by STM
Same here. My car runs good but the only issues are the occasional extra time to start and the throttle response.
