Jiving the physical timing with the AEM

Hello,
I am trying to set up an AEM on an EVO, and cannot for the life of me find the timing pointer and mark on the crank pulley/timing cover! Also, what marks are on the timing pointer? For those that have setup an EVO with the AEM, what general area are you in for the initial timing setup? I think it starts you out at 20 degrees or so, but I am sure there are not timing marks to 20 degrees on the engine....
I want to get this setting right, as it is critical for the propper operation of the AEM....
I am starting off with stock MAF and the AEM wideband, then planning to add the MAP and IAT to run speed-density. Does anyone have a good map for a stock-type setup? From what I can see, the basemap is quite generous with the fuel....

Thank for any and all help!
Carl Crawford

What kind of timing light are you using? You are attaching the timing light pickup to the #1 spark plug wire right?

With the timing light flashing you should see a white mark "appear" from nowhere and hover around some tick marks on the timing cover. The T on the timing cover is 0 degrees, and then each line from the T is 5 degrees.

Blak,
Thanks for the heads up, but I am an experienced mechanic.... The problem I was having was that I could not physically see the marks on the timing cover, it was only after I removed the overflow bottle and loosened the power steering resovoir that I could see the marks! You really have to hold your head just right to see them...

That brings me to another point..... WHAT was mitsubishi thinking! The marks on the timing cover are meant to be read from directly above, but there is no way to see them with the motor mount in the way. So by looking at them sideways like you have to, the paralax is huge! You have not idea what the real timing is, just a guess...... also, the AEM was at 20 degrees, and the physical timing looked like it was around 20, but I have no way to know for sure as there is no 20 mark on the cover!

I am beginning to think that you do not have to set the timing on these, sort of like the Supra AEM..... I have called the tech line, but of course no answer or callback...

This whole timing thing is, Um, well, sort of important.....

Thanks!

You definitely need to set the timing up so what is in the timing map is shown at the crank with a strobe. Each car will be different as well, so you have to start by synching the timing on every car as part of the EMS setup.

Easiest method is to just set the whole timing map to 5 degrees in the idle range and then see if the crank agrees. Adjust the timing wizard until the crank shows 5 degrees.

Then set the whole timing map to 10 degrees, check it at idle to make sure it agrees still, then rev it to 5000 RPM and see if it is at 10 degrees. If the timing is off you will need to adjust the pickup delay comp value. Try going higher first and see if that reduces the high RPM drift.

Haha, sorry if my post sounded like I thought you weren't experienced. I have to assume the worst, especially here...

I still think you would be a LOT better off posting on the EMS forums rather than here.

Not sure if it will be an option for you, but if you remove the accessory serpentine belt and the cam gear cover, the timing marks should be easily visible. But running the engine with the serpentine belt removed might not be a good idea.
