AEM vs. Hallman vs. MoTec

Hey guys,

I'm just about to wrap up my parts list for my current build and the "part" I need to grab is a stand-alone.

I've been reading a lot about AEM, Hallman and MoTec, but I'd like to grab a little personal input from anyone who cares to share it. Here's what I've gathered so far:

AEM Series 2: Widely used, easily tuned, many great features, a lot of shops are familiar with them.

- But I've read a lot about this specific ECU having "hick ups" and not being the smoothest ECU. I've also read about people having issues with stalling, though it could be due to a high cam profile, I'm not sure..

Hallman 2000: Great ECU, potentially "smoother" than the AEM, better features and generally considered to be a better overall ECU.

- Though I've read a lot of good about it and most seem to agree it is a better choice than the AEM, I haven't found much on what, if any, it's issues are. That could be good, or that could be bad. I've also seen far less shops either selling it, promoting it or that even tune with this ECU.

MoTec: The cream of the crop! While expensive, most of what I've read has shown that this is by far a much more superior ECU, everything from its ignition tables to it's data logging, it does everything better.

- While the general concensus is this outperforms anything and everything under the sun, I've seen less shops tuning with this ECU also. That could be due to costs, I'm not sure. But is this really a vastly superior ECU, to the tube of double the price ?

I guess my questions are; if money were not an issue which would you run an why? If you've had experiance with all of them, what were the pros and cons to each system and which did you prefer? Does the AEM really have that many issues?

The car isn't driven everyday but I'm not looking to cheap out on the ECU only to have my car have issues during cold starts, at idle and die randomly. I'd rather spend money than have those issues.

If you have any good links and don't care to answer any of the questions I have, feel free to post them. I've done a lot of searching and reading, sometimes it's better to just straight up ask.

As always I appreciate your input! Thank you in advance!

I really like the simplicity and ease of setup with the Haltech. AEM is awesome if you take the time to learn the interface

AEM Infinity 6.

If you are going to go AEM do the infinity. It is VE based and super fast and crisp. It is so much better than the series 1 and series 2 AEM units. The GUI is very easy.

I have been running an AEM Infinity for the last year, and I have loved it. It does everything, Flex Fuel, Boost control, engine protection, data log a boat load of stuff on a flash drive so it is easy to pull logs and review. It just seems to do everything really well.

I have only read about the motec unit and it is really good also.

They're all going to do the job well. IMO unless you're tuning it yourself, just get the ECU that your tuner feels most comfortable with. I use a Series 2, but if I was in the market again for a stand alone I'd make a patch harness and go with the Infinity no question.

if you decide to go motec , OKM is a must with a wideband knock sensor.

So which one is the best. Looking for a standalone with e85 sensor capability.

I think the OP layed it out best.

motec
haltec
aem

But if you are not tuning the car, go with whatever your tuner is more comfortable with.

The AEM infinity 6 on paper looks to be the best value for what you get. Its similar to a Haltech elite for almost half the cost. I actually switched from a Haltech Platinum to go aem infinity.
