Aem EMS or not?

I currently have a stock EVO VIII. I am thinking about getting an AEM EMS, a 3" turbo back exhaust and a MBC.

From what I have read, this setup, while pretty simple, yeilds about 80 HP and has lots of potential.

Would anyone care to add their .02 regarding the AEM EMS and its reliability, tuneability and over power gains.

Thanx in advance for your input!

Scott

AEM EMS is one of the best things i have done to the EVO. Also make sure you convert to Speed Density if you are going to go with it. You will love it trust me! Only problem is you will have allot of learning to do..LOL.. i would get it tuned by a professional so you have a couple good maps to start out with. Then when you feel comfortable tinker with some things on your own map to start learning. Before you do though make sure you read the manual from front to back!!!! Just my 0.02

I think that it is the best upgrade I have on my car.
If you want to do it you can use its boost control (only $50.00) and buy the O2 wide band sensor (you will increase your gas mileage).

hey, how is the drivability of the evo with the ems? It is complicated to learn how to tune with the unit? I'm debating btw the aem and the utech. What should I do? The evo is my daily driver.

The EMS bolts and plugs directly in place of the stock ECU so it is better integrated. Plus, it can control everything on your car. It makes A LOT of power and, according to TurboTrix, is the PERFECT ECU for the Evolution.

Of course they tell you its the PERFECT ECU, they are AEm certified dealrs. Ever hear of John Shepard? O yeah thats right he has the fastest DSM in the world. Ever hear about when his AEM EMS software encountered a problem and decided it was gonna spray nitrous into the engine while the car was shut off. So he goes to start the car.... BOOM !!!!! There goes the motor. But since he is a highly sponsored racer all he did was go to his shop and grab a new motor and install it the same night so he can race the next day. Do you have a few spare EVO motors laying around ???? I know I dont......

how would this compare to vishnu's stage one kit sounds like very similar mods and probably quite a bit cheaper what about the reliability and smooth power curve as compared to vishu stage 1

Build up your car with the parts you think are best then bring it all together with a flash or standalone.

Stage packages are a waste of money per HP gained.

If I were you I would think twice about the EMS. I have it, it made great gains, but it's around $2000 dollars to get it setup, tuned and have a wideband. It makes more power than a piggyback easy, but perhaps your not concerned about power so much? Think these thing's out. If I was on a budget and it was between getting the EMS w/ Wideband or SAFC2, I might buy the SAFC2. Then you can take the extra $1500 and purchase Cams, Intercooler, etc. Or in my case, I would have done the RRE JICs and Hoosiers as my first modification if I had it to do over. But since I have just about everything else done to my car I have the EMS, and it will benefit me when I do get a few more power modifications.

Just for references, this was Johns error not the AEM Software, it's been covered countless times on the AEM Forums. And it possible to blow your intake manifold off with nitrous several ways, look at the guy who did it at the shootout. To blame it on the AEM is like blaming a SAFC for blowing your engine if you lean it out to 16:1.

How about Utech? Easy to learn how to tune it urself, and it's alot cheaper than AEM EMS. With open loop fuel, I think it should be up there with EMS. What do you guys think?

The utech doesnt compare at all with the ems. It is very hard to tune the utech with the multiple ignition and fuel maps the stock ecu has. You still are using the factory mass air piggy backed system. We've had better success with the utech by flashing both igntion and fuel maps the same and using the utech off that. Just an FYI ...
