BP, i find for some reason a lot easier to get hold of.. the caltex stuff made my car idle weird, but it may have been just that batch, but i havent used it since
Pete !

Pete !
I use Shell Optimax when I'm going premium. I've used a few others but Optimax is the only one I've noticed a decent improvement in mileage. I also reckon regular unleaded there's a difference. I'm back on Shells base stuff and I'm going to stick some Mobil in as I know I should get 600 to a take before fuel light comes on and the Shell stuff is giving me 550.
I use everything except Vortex Gold. Nasty fuel that one. I was getting some work done on my S2000 once, and I did one run with Shell Optimax. 3 weeks later, I went back to get my car retuned, but I was running Vortex Gold instead.
The baseline dyno run they took this time, was 10-15kw lower over the entire rev range than the new dyno run. This is on the same dyno, under similar humidity and temperature. Sure it was 3 weeks apart, but a staggering difference of 6-10%?
All that did was confirm my "butt dyno" feelings that Vortex wasn't quite as good as the other three.
One thing to remember though, is that the car was specifically tuned for max power on Shell Optimax. So perhaps if I had retuned it to Vortex, the difference wouldn't be so big... But I think there still would be a difference.

I heard that they signed up with Caltex. I heard this through the business section of a newspaper, and it was rumour at the time, so it may not be true.
Considering the size of the deal, Woolworths Premium may not have the same additives as Vortex (Which, I don't think is all that great anyway)., as it'd be cheaper to simply run a second batch without the additives. Woolworths is all about sacraficing quality for price, aren't they?

Woolworth's uses Caltex petrol as do 7Eleven service stations. I tried Woolworth's petrol a couple of times and it is as bad as Caltex just plain dirty rubbish. BP purchases its petrol off Shell, but this does not mean it is the same petrol. BP has cleaner petrol than anything else out there on the market and has a slightly higher octane level than Shell. You have to remember when BP purchase Shell's petrol it puts in additives but it is not like adding octane boosters or anything, it just is not that easy. They do process it and remanufacture the product.

The poll results are suprising to say the least. I wonder if its because Optimax is more widely available than all the other fuels or if it is promoted better....................
I've used it and
. I can only get it when I go either further north or a long way south.

From what i've seen, BP Ultimate was full of imperfections and took a small amount of performance from my GSR. However, I run pretty much on Optimax now, coles have the same fuel dockets as Woolies does and the petrol is still the same quality. Hell, if the V8 supercars run on optimax, I'm betting it's the best quality petrol available. I won't EVER use BP Ultimate again due to the fact it caused problems with my engine. Also, the mileage you'll get out of a tank directly relates to HOW you drive your car, not the fuel in it. Yes you'll get slightly more from premium brands over regular brands but If you constantly drive up around the 5000 mark before shifting (like me!) then don't expect to get more than 400-500km from a tank.

For a fuel that has a higher octane, in a car with a progessive knock sensor, then it will also produce more power per stroke once the ignition timing advances - meaning your foot isn't so heavily on the throttle during part-throttle accelerations and cruising, saving you fuel.
So a better quality fuel will get you increased mileage.

That's not true. For a higher density fuel, the computer will adjust and inject less fuel under close loop operation, because the O2 sensor is telling it it's burning too rich.
