Feasible to mod a GLi ??
Feasible to mod a GLi ??
Hey fellas,
I've been researching a bit lately about the Lancer Gli Coupe (1.5 Litre)
I was interested in mod-ing this particular vehicle but after some consideration i don't believe that it's worth "doing up" - Although i'll probably be driving this car for the next 4 or more years...
I was curious about any body else's opinion on this subject.
Do you think it's wise ??

You won't get extreme power with a 1.5l engine however a 2inch exhaust, a ram pod and a larger throttle body would improve the performance a bit but then again save your money up over the four years and get a old GSR or something along those lines. Its always a hard choice.
Re: Feasible to mod a GLi ??
Mate, the advise given by spider is probably the best. The 1.5L lancer is a town car and it does that well gives a zippy response and fuel economy. With the mods it wil give you a little little bit of ompfff, don't expect too much but it will still give you some fun with civics and excel racer.
"it's an absolute ***** when u have 5 ppl in the car going up a bloody hill"...mate you have a 1.5L economical engine can't ask too much from her.

HOT UP YOUR GLi!!!!
I own a 97 GLi Coupe. I am not going to hot up this engine.... But the replacement engine, yes. The 1.5 is just not gutsy enough and after driving my friends hotted up Proton (uses the same engine) I decided to replace the engine instead. But still in stock form it doesn't perform badly. I have blasted a VS commodore, driven by a guy who didn't know how to drive. It's got enough low end oomph to get away with -if- your reaction time is good and you can change at the right time.
My first car was a 1994 Mitsubishi Lancer CC 4 door sedan, I put a 2.25" exhaust system (biggest you can possibly go, do not go bigger) and some good extractors on it. It only cost me $850 and the difference was amazing. I will admit it was no sports car but, I could definately beat and standard Falcon or Commodore on the road. This was possible because of the weight of the GL (less than a tonne) and I knew the car.

The best engine conversion for the car is the 1.6Ltr Mivec, it produces 130kw, and blots straight in. There is also a 2Ltr version from the FTO which can fit with lots and lots of work and produces 150kw. Another alternate is the CE shape GSR engine which many think is not available, but is sold in Japan. This engine will bolt in as it is the 4G93 engine which is sold in the 1.8ltr varient of the Lancer but the big difference is that it is turbo. I unfortunately do not have the figures but I presume around 150kw. And well for ultimate performance there is the 4G63 engine from the Evolution but as there is a limited number and often quite costly the VR4 4G93 engine may be the better option as it is essentially the same as the evolution engine with just a little less power. No, I do not have any pictures on the computer of my car but, the car now belongs to my brother in law so it wont be a problem. It had a EVO III front bar and GSR rear spoiler EVO III rear lights, clear side indicators. Can't realy remember too much else, but it looked hot. and before you ask, no it was not Mivec. It was either Mivec or pay a bit more and get a better car, so I now have a ralliart edition Lancer VR-X
mivec is way too expensive i think. if u want more speed get the DOHC head with some extractors, cold air induction kit and a 2" exhaust and u will get a great power gain and should only cost $2000-$2500. my friend got a 2" catback exhaust and a unifilter on his mirage and now it keeps up with my 1.8 and gave him a nice little power gain.
I've posted this response many times in many posts, but here it is again. I have a 2000 Lancer GLi. I was lucky enough to find a GSR front cut and for a shade over $5k, bought it, bolted it in and drove away with a big simle on my face. If you were to consider the EVO route, not only are they rare for a late model lancer, but also expensive compared to the 1.8L.
if ur after more torque then the only real way is to supercharge or turbocharge the engine
my mate turbo'd his 1.5 for under 3k and its running close to 100kw@wheels and its probably more reliable than the stock 4g15 lol

I have done a bit of research on this, and have been reliably informed (by a Lancer nutter) that it is illegal to install Evo engines as a transplant in Australia. At least in NSW. Is this true?
