Thumbs up Intercooler question

I am planning to do the following mods:

SAFCII or AEM EMS w/ tuning, 680cc injectors, HKS 264/272 camshafts, Walbro fuel pump, MBC, lower IC piping plus all the mods that I currently have(see my singnature).

My question is...do I have to replace the stock intercooler?

I want the car to be reliable and hopefully push around 400 crank hp. Is a intercooler replacement necessary? Thanks guys.....and I am planning to do this at your shop AMS....

A new FMIC is not "needed" for those mods at all but the AMS intercooler is, without question, one of the best on the market. It is very beefy and will take a hit without cracking. Coulpled with their lower intercooler pipe, you will see significant gains. I know I did.

Thanks Smog....so you're saying that I do not need an intercooler but if I did I should go with the AMS? just wanted to clarify. I will probably go with their ingtercooler if I upgrade my turbo.

Thumbs up Ams

Forgot to mention the AMS is a direct replacement of the stock intercooler. With minor trimming to the "splash shield" I was even able to reinstall it.

FYI: I am running the AMS unit because I use my EVO to play on the roadcourse. I don't have any temp sensors in the piping...................but there is a significant difference in temp over the stock unit between the inlet and exit piping after a 20 minute session on the track. That coupled with my Koyo radiator and the car stays plenty cool on the track. (just spent 2 days on MAM with no issues www.midamericamotorplex.com )

Not to mention it looks good

Thanks for the feedback guys! What if I just get the lower IC pipe and leave the stock IC on the car? Would I see any gains?

I would say, very few, but the spool time would be improved. If you can get boost sooner, you will have more power, sooner.

if i were to get just the lower and upper intercooler pipes, would i be able to put in a bigger IC later? and i'm assuming all your turbo kits use a different lower IC pipe correct? last, i would really like to keep my system as a recirculating system, so the tial BOV might not be a good choice. are there any options with the upper intercooler pipe that keeps it a recirculating system? (maybe a hose can be fabbed up to the greddy back to the intake tube or something...). and if i can't get recirc system, what would be the benefit of VTA? from my experience there is none, but you guys do this every day so maybe i'm missing something. what kind of gains will i see replacing both lower and upper intercooler pipes? ( i know that the peak HP gains are minimal, but i'm more interested in a better power band, and quicker spool)

thanks in advance, and feel free to PM details (sometimes i forget where i posted)

My friend just picked up an AMS intercooler the other day. They are of very high quality, and look really nice. They're HUGE too. We're installing it today, so im interested to see how it fits.
