Question on AMS products

My plan is to get the HKS 272, gears and Fuel pump installed over the next couple of months and have a few questions regarding some AMS products

1) Can the AMS Upper and Lower I/C pipes be used with the stock airbox? i know that i'll need to get a mini battery

2) The upper i/c pipes comes with the TIAL BOV. I have a Greddy Type -S. Can I use that instead or you wouldn't recommend it for any reason

3) I plan on tracking the car (no drag strips)...just plain closed course DE events. Would you recommend anything else? Or based on the info here should i go a different route. open to suggestions

As of now I have gauges (boost, EGT and oil temp), TBE and muellerized Buddy Clubs

I know it may be a bit of an overkill at this point but i may go with the AEM EMS. I plan on VTA with the EMS and perhaps down the line be able to get one of the AMS turbo upgrades.

thanks for your help

Is this question ONLY for AMS? it says you are open to suggestions.

Lower IC pipe is fine, the upper will interfere with the intake pipe I believe.
The TIAL is good, or they wouldn't put it on their stuff.

the mini-battery can be fixed by using a Miata battery.
Why would you go with a VTA BOV? wouldn't that cause a surge issue, considering it is a ClOSED system/ I had the RFL BOV, and dumped it, due to driveability issues. I would get an AEM UEGO guage also.
You cant/wont go wrong with AMS, but I thought I would throw in my 2c. good luck, and keep us posted to your progress.

thanks for the thoughts. The question is open to everyone to comment, but relevant to the AMS section as it relates to their products...should have clarified that.

As for VTA, the only reason i would do that would be if I went with a AEM EMS. otherwise no. I can go the flash route too but it's just a PITA if i keep adding stuff to the car so i'd rather go with the EMS option. There's no one around where i live that can do flashes...just a couple tuners that have AEM experience.

OK, if you have great tuners with the AEM EMS, go that route. I just think the VTA BOV are overrated, and the computer is supposed to measure the air in the system, and if all the sudden there is a drop in the volume/pressure of air, the computer has to constantly adjust for that. My turboXS RFL was in the car for 2 weeks before it found its way to a new owner. I have a piggyback computer, and a flash (Vishnu), and really cant help you with the AEM stuff, but if AMS uses it, there is a reason. I am going to do alot of tracking next year also (no drags), and I will keep you apprised on what I find works, and what doesnt, you do the same for me.

1) Can the AMS Upper and Lower I/C pipes be used with the stock airbox? i know that i'll need to get a mini battery It really wont fit very well if at all with the stock airbox

2) The upper i/c pipes comes with the TIAL BOV. I have a Greddy Type -S. Can I use that instead or you wouldn't recommend it for any reason we can flange it for whatever BOV you like. The type RS is a great BOV

3) I plan on tracking the car (no drag strips)...just plain closed course DE events. Would you recommend anything else? Or based on the info here should i go a different route. open to suggestions well thats a loaded Question but Good wheels and tires are a big one. An upgraded FMIC wouldnt hurt along with a lower IC pipe. Other then that..suspension, suspension suspension. im sure Jon K could pop in here and help you out

How many DE/Track Events have you done? That is a big part of what else you should do to the car.

The Mulerized buddy clubs are a good start for suspension, I would worry about going to crazy right off, You are going to be making far more changes to yourself than the car, and changing the car will just hide what mistakes you make (or in some cases, make them worse)

Reliability will be the biggest issue, sure you can squeeze out 10-15 more HP, but at what risk.. So error on the safe side of boost levels, fuel ratio etc..

Wheels/Tires.. For starting out, slap on Some Azenis and run a couple sets to the cords. Avoid R compounds to start as you want the education that the street tires give you.

if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

If you are just starting out, I would get braided lines, Motul brake fluid, LIC, AMS Catback, Testpipe, AMS flash (with safer boost curve), and rear swaybar. This should hold you for the first year.

Depending on how fast you progress, I would look into a coilovers and other power mods down the road.

As Jon can attest a mildly prepped Evo is a force to be reckoned with at an track. One with AMS stage 1-3 on a good coil-over setup and good tires, is pretty much unbeatable by most 'track-prepped' cars.

thanks for the reply. i've done quite a few DE events in the past couple years and was pretty comfortable with the stock suspension prior to moving on to the coilovers.

Totally see your point about having a car that's reliable so that's why i've been thinking about the mods for so long.

thanks again for the feed back and i'll let you know if i have any more questions. just wish shops like AMS were closer
