AMS Test Pipe vs Cat in Chicago
I know most guys who surf this forum are from the chicagoland area. I'm from hoffman/schaumburg and I'm right next to AMS shop. I was wondering if the test pipe was noticed by any cops and ticketed for noise, etc.. Or if anyone had any stories about their cats and emissions testing. Anything along those lines will fly. I was going to buy a turboback 3" but I don't know which to get, the test pipe or the hi-flow cat.
Thanks for the the help and CHICAGOLAND AREA PEOPLE responses will work best!

I got the HFC. I live in Plainfield and I am subject to the emissions testing. I think you have a few years before our cars will be due for testing. They used to slide a mirror under the car to make sure the Cat is still there. I know the last time I was there they just hooked up to the OBD II port, but I can't remember if they still looked under the car or not???? I'm not sure what the penalty would be for removing the cat I would guess some kind of $$$$fine???
im a little bit south of you in woodridge, and i have gotten tickets for loud exhaust when all i had was the catback on. just depends on what kinda day the cop is having. you could always run a high flow cat, then throw on a test pipe for track days.
I have a test pipe with no problems. Once was pulled over in the evo, but that was for speeding. Cop didn't say anything about the exhaust. The only thing is, the car stinks. You can definately tell there is no cat. Just turn your engine off if you're pulled over.
I've gotten a ticket for a loud exhaust with my test pipe. Never been pulled over with the HF cat yet. If you want the best of both worlds, get a test pipe and HF cat and install them with v-band flanges. That way it's easy to swap them.

I used to have a hi flo cat and now i switched to the testpipe. I like the testpipe a lot more and I have not gotten into trouble with it yet. If you dont drive like a maniac flooring it everywhere you should be fine.
