AMS 50 Trim step-by-step install pics....

Well, its friday night and I spent my evening working on my EVO.... had to do it on my own since my bro is too busy with his girl... but ohh well it was fun and I took my time and enjoyed every step of the process.

(above)
Here, I'm just trying to remove the stock turbo....drained out all the coolant into a clean container which I'll reuse anyway. Removed the fan, radiator etc, stock turbo came off real easily....

(above)
Well here is the stock turbo out of the car... Wow its real small....I was looking at the compressor cover and was like darn!!! real puny!!!

(above)
Well here is the engine bay....naked as can be.. where did the turbo go? straight to the trash; Anyway in this step I'm gonna degrease the block and detail as much as I can since I'm a neat freak when it comes to my cars....and yes the oil is draining down into the funnel below

(above)
Well here I just slipped the new turbo in just for the heck of it.....I'm going to connect the oil and coolant lines tomorrow when there is more light out...then I'm gonna secure everything down and tq. everything down to spec... it pays to have the right tools handy...including the desktop reading lamp

(above)
A side shot of the turbo in its position...later on the intake pipe and filter will connect to the turbo inlet

(above)
Another sideshot...

(above)
Top view.....I'll be posting more pics as I progress

By the way Martin/Eric,

I do have some minor questions about the install, I'll post pics up later, or I just might PM them to you

I have a few questions:

1) Once everything is bolted up and ready to go, do I need to "prime" the turbo before starting it? I mean my concern is that since the new turbo wont have any oil/coolant in its passages I dont want it to get damaged.

2) As for the support bracket that goes on the block, does the washer go in between the block and the bracket or should it (the washer) go in between the bolt and the bracket?

3) For the radiator fan, I am cutting the OEM wire harness including the socket and soldering it to the slimfan right?

4) Is there going to be enough clearance between the turbo outlet/LICP and the front lower motor mount?

Those are pretty much all my questions.

I've decided not to use your supplied gaskets for the exhaust.... I'm just gonna use some "copper exhaust gasket maker" and just apply it along the flanges.
I know that those gaskets in due time will rot out and disintegrate anyway....

An idea

As far as priming the turbo you can go ahead and squirt motor oil into the center section of the turbo.MAKE SURE TO GO THROUGH THE OIL LINE SIDE AND NOT THE COOLANT SIDE!!!!!! Just be cautious we all know how things can get expensive in a jiffy. By the way what are you doing with the 10.5 hotside. PM me and let me know.

I'm probably gonna sell the 10.5 hotside... if you are interested I'll sell it provided you pay shipping

Thanks for the offer John, I'm probably gonna bug my brother (auto mecanic/technician in training at Lincoln Tech, and former US NAVY seabee/mecanic) to help me before I make you come out from LI to Queens...

I'll post up more pics as I progress with the install....

Great post! I got in on the group buy for the 50 Trims so I will be using your guide.

Question for you, does the kit come with a lower IC pipe or do I have to buy one that will fit with the kit?

I installed a 50 trim, RNR kit, in a buddies Evo. To prime the turbo we pulled the fuel pump fuse and then turned the car over for 15 seconds. We did that 8 times to get enough oil to the turbo. After we started the car we let it idle for about 20 minutes checking for leaks and letting everything fill up. Shut it down and check all fluid levels and all fittings again and then check it all one more time. Then we started it and let it idle again for about 20 min and checked everything one more time just to be sure. Good luck and enjoy your new turbo. I wish I had the money right now to buy one because they are beasts.

1. You can unplug your cam and crank angle sensors and turn your motor over until your oil pressure light goes off.. This will lube the entire motor and turbo prior to making any serious rpm.

2. The washer is installed on the bolt....

3. Follow thewires that come off your factory fan that go to your fan speed control box. Cut the plug off the end of that harness leaving about 2" of wire. Solder that connector to the supplied fan harness (black to black and blue to ???) Relocate the fan control box to the fram rail and plug the new fan into it.

4. Yes. Its very close but it fits. You may need to clock the compressor cover just a bit to find the optimal clearance. Watch the lower IC pipe to radiator mount clearance also. You may need to zip tie the lower AC line out of the way also.

Let us know if you have any other questions...

I love theses "How to install" threads, very informative. One qiuck question though, is there a nipple for a boost source on the turbo?
