AMS tests the New Forced Performance HTA37R!

With all the HTA talk as of late we had Rob and the guys over at Forced Performance send us an HTA37R over to test out on our Dyno. As with Every test we do here we kept it as scientific as possible.

First here are some details about the test mule. Our customer Dave Bruzewski's Black EVO VIII with all the fixins.

AMS 37R/HTA37R Turbo kit
AMS VSR Twin Rail Intake manifold
AMS Race FMIC
AMS 2.3 Stroker motor
AMS Race head
Jun 272/272 cams
AMS Catback with test pipe
Two sets of 880cc injectors
and so on and so on hahaha

Lets just say this is one bad *** car.

The test was done here in house on our Dynojet 424X Dyno

Boost on both turbos was set to peak at 42 psi and by redline would fall to about 38.5

Fuel was VP's new Q16 blend

AFR's were set at about 11.8:1

This is a back to back look at the turbos. You can see the HTA spools about the same but between 6000 and 8000 RPM it does pick up a little bit of HP and torque. Not as much of a gain as we would have expect based on HTA35R and HTA30R testing but still a gain none the less.

Have a look for yourself

Red line = HTA37R
Blue Line = AMS 37R

Summary: If you currently have an AMS 37R I don't know if the labor and cost would offset the gains from the HTA37R turbo but if you are in the market for an upgrade from say a smaller turbo like a GT30R, GT35R, Green etc... the HTA37R spools the same as the standard 37R and makes more power. It would be a great option.

Great test AMS, you guys always do a excellent job. Are the gains worth the additional cost?? I'm not convinced. How much is the HTA37??

Great test! Thanks AMS!

Can't wait to see what FP says. . .

I say flop for the extra cost.

P.S. Was there any significant changes in timing/fueling down low? Or did you guys just keep all the settings the same?

Spool better? I see the blue with advantages from 5-6 grand and then the HTA comes alive after that with gains solely on the very top end.

Am I seeing something wrong?

it's pretty clear the cost of converting a standard 37R to a HTA37R isn't worth it. The gains made by the HTA37R in the posted graph don't justify spending the cash to convert standard 37R. Great test though!

this is sooo disappointing! well for the cost of the fp t4z 88hta it seems that the turbo is pretty much worthless compared to a standard ball bearing 67 p-trim... Guess i'll look at some other turbo options now

I definately wouldn't say worthless the spool looks nearly identical with a solid 20-30whp gain up top. $400, bucks isn't a bad deal at all.

Most, myself included, thought you would see similiar top end with decreased spool. It worked the opposite minimal spool loss with a extra kick up top.

I would take it, but to be honest on a street car it's hard to beat that HTA35R.

What about between 5000 and 6000 RPM where the AMS turbo actually has more torque and hp.

from my understanding is that you CAN NOT convert a 37r to an hta you will have to buy the turbo directly from fp , because theyre are too many variations of the 37r turbo out there .

Interesting comparison, is this just because the 37R was so well designed and there just isn't much left to gain? The HTA35R seems to make some substantial gains. Just food for thought.
