Cost Comparison: Buying in US or Canada

I just bought a 2010 GSR, and seriously looked at buying in the States, but didn't think it was enough of a savings to sacrifice the warranty. Thot it was worth sharing, so here's my breakdown.

33,590....US MSRP
-2,015....6.0% Discount
31,575... TOTAL US $

Additional fees
250.... Paint
760.... Freight
250.... PDI
200.... Other Misc Fees

Total US$ = 33,035

+ 6.1 % duty for Japanese cars

Grand Total US$ = 35,050

Convert to CDN at 1.07 (what my bank would do for certified check)

Total CDN$ = 37,503

When you come to the border, here's what you pay in CDN $
200..... RIV
75....... AC Tax
30....... Tire Tax
1,875.. GST 5%
Sub Total CDN$ = 2,180

Then you have to register, and make it ready to drive in Ontario:
150.... Federal Insp
50...... Saftey
295..... Reg/Lics
3,000.. PST 8%
Sub Total CDN$ = 3,495

GRAND TOTAL CDN$ = 37,503 + 2,180 + 3,495 = $43,178

I paid $46,856 OTD including tint. So, $3600 difference. To me, that's worth it for the warranty. And for resale, it’s always easier to sell the car with the km/h on the top!

Also note, this has nothing to do with trying to sway people to buy CDN. It’s dollars and cents only.

^my main reason for not buying in the US was that I did not have the money upfront. Canadian banks said no since the item was a vehicle and they can't authorize that amount for a US car. US banks don't lend money to international purchasers either. 5 speed with SSS would have been sweet!

Dude the trick is to never register it up here. If it was me, and i will tell ya I was damn close. I would buy the car with the help of my wonderful aunt, and keep it registered down there. lol I would be laughing, laughing at how much money I saved. and since it remains registered down there. I keep my warranty lol. just bring it to buffalo now and then for critical service.

But seriously, Down in Cali it was 29,999 for that new EVO, damn

I just bought mine for $50,000: 2010 GSR + handling package(aka technology package) + tax. I know it could have been lower, but I didnt spend too much time to work the price down.
I live in vancouver area, was thinking about buying in US too, drove to Portland, Oregon (tax free), found a dealer, told the sales what i wanted, and he said no sales to canadians, fxxk him, i left.

although warranty isn't much of a concern for me as I, like most other evo owners, plan on mod the car anyways.
