Importing an evo 9 into canada

I have been looking at evo's and sti's for over a year and have finally decided to make my first big vehicle buy. I really like the evo 9, but since they were never available in Canada they are extremely hard to find without importing one. I have my eye on one of the 9s listed for sale on this site. But i don't know what I would need to do to it before i can register it. Would this also make it not possible to fly down and drive one back?

Thanks

Edit: Also would importing it be costly?

Thread was opened way back in '03, so skip a few pages until you get to '08, which is when they became legal.

You can find all the info you need at http://www.riv.ca, which includes all other car makes and models too. Off the top of my head, I think you will require 2 parts (they're listed on the RIV website). Because Evos aren't made in the US/Canada, you will have to pay duty on top of your local GST/PST, which is based on the value of the car.

I will be importing one after winter, so I've been looking into it a lot. Doesn't seem that complicated. You can also get a broker to do all the stuff for you, but that will cost another $1k-2k above everything.

I'd have to check with the previous owner of my Evo to make sure because he's the one that imported it, but AFAIK all you need to do on the car to make it legal here is have DRL's (daytime running lights). In my case the fog lights are just re-wired so that they're always on.

I dunno where you are in BC, but there's some there or in alberta (especially if you're a little flexible on the model)...I think alberta is a little more relaxed on the car care, or whatever it's called now (grew up in N. Delta/Burnaby).

when you do purchase one, if you are importing, because they're manufactured in Japan, you pay 5 or 6 percent duty on it at the border.. keep that in mind.

and if at all possible. ship it close, go pick it up with a trailer. thats what i did.. i hate being stuck somewhere in the middle of no where with no tools or no nothing...

I drove mine back, no problem. Ask the owner to fax you a copy of the clear title. Fax the title to the USA border you will be crossing at. The USA side needs 3 days to check the paper work (they make sure there’s no liens and the vehicle is not stolen). After 3 days you can call the USA side make sure everything is ok. If it's ok you're good to go.

You will also need insurance and a temp licence plate. The plate is issued from the state where you pick up the car.

Same boat as myself. Waiting for the new year, too start shopping around. Im planning on going with the VIII tho. If I remember reading correctly off riv.ca. I think the vehicle has to be a clean title (no accidents, stolen recovery, etc) Good luck with the pick up.

hahaha....nice! I got my RA from kijiji

but it might be a little easier driving it back from alberta than the states. at least the dash will be in km.

i actually living in alberta, and flying down to kelowna BC to pick this beauty up... actually super stoked, i cant sleep.. when i try, all i get is visions of of color schemes and guages, and BOV's ... and to top it all off.. this envelope full of 100's is MIGHTY tempting! lol but seriously i talking with the "guy" on the first add... he sent me a website and everthing.. where apparently the car is being held in the yukon somewhere...?? anyways long story short.. all the times for this holding warehouse place were in standart EURO time... and i lost count at 15 grammical errors on a supposed professional site.... be weary everyone.. being scammed.. would just plain blow!

After pricing out what it would cost to import it I would try to get one in Canada already if i were you. Since the 8s are starting to become a little more common here.

Also grats Surreal! I don't think i would be able to sleep either

Why would the dash be in KM? It's still a USDM car...
