This is the first ever Japanese engine tuned by the European Company, AMG. It was used in the 91 and 92 Galant. It is still a very sought after collectible in Japan.

I wonder how it was brought into the country, being never available for the North American market and not eligible under the 15 year rule until 2006.

You don't necessarily need to wait for the 15 year rule to come in to effect. Rip one apart in japan, send all the AMG tuned stuff over, and slap it on to a standard Galant. And you have essentially the same thing--an AMG retrofitted Galant
