Octane Recommendation?

For a 2003 Galant V6 the manual says fill it up w/ 91 or 92 octane if not, vehicle may lose level of performance.... Is that the only case or filling it up with lower octane level would harm the motor eventually?

What about filling it up w/ an octane booster shots? Would this compensate? Man its just the gas prices were going nuts lately!

don't use the "nawz in a can" thing.. it facks up your engine.

if you use a lower octane, the ecu will compensate by turning back the timing, which will reduce your performance but won't hurt the engine.

i always fill up with 91 on my RA

don't use the octane booster, i've read a couple articles and seen a couple shows on the stuff and it's pretty much useless...when it says it increases octane by 3-4 points, it isn't what you think....example: logically, anyone would think that filling with 87 octane and adding "4point" octane booster would give you 91 octane - reality, this will give you 87.4 octane....points means tenths of an octane rating so you would have to dump in 10 bottles of the **** and it's WAY more expensive then just filling up with 91 in the first place

sillypuddy: no need for 91 on your RA, you are just wasting money, 87 is perfectly fine for your ride man

It working fine vs. what's best is too things

the ecu advances timing when there is no knock and it actual performs better. We have datalog to prove it

THANKS A BUNCH!

So 89 or 87 won't hurt at all? Thats cool, I hope it doesn't affect emmissions in the long run. And no, I've been pretty hesitant about the booster shots as well thats why I asked here first.

Couldn't hurt, but I just filled up last night with Shell bronze after running 2 weeks of silver, and man, I sure could feel the difference.

another question. say you fill up 87 or 89 this week coz 92 up is way up high, then next week comes down and fill up w/ higher octanes...the question is, would it be bad to keep switching back and forth making the ecu adjust timing?

it doesn't hurt to go back and forth.. but I just stick to the 91 because it's less than $5 a tank difference.. I can't be bothered to watch for fallinng prices

I went to Petro Canada last week. They were out or Regular, out of Super. Only ultra clean at 94 octane was available. They were letting it go for the price of the regular. So obviously I filled up with that one... And I did notice a difference

I tried going back to 92, and yeah I noticed the difference it consumed. It does pay back the mileage.
