Evo I or US Lancer??

hey,

it's only 3 or so more years until the Evo I's become legal for import into Canada from Japan, and I've been looking around on overseas boards and I've noticed that you can pick up Evo I's, II's, & some III's for under $12,000 CND and this got me thinking; I've always planned on getting a newer Lancer and modding it with turbo and that, but I could get a REAL Evo if I wait a while longer for well less than a Lancer, let alone a modded Lancer.

Performance wise the Evo wins hands down, but the thing holding me back is the older styling. The Lancer would obviously look better, newer, and more modern...but owning an actually Evo at a price that I won't have to take out a 2nd mortgage for. What would you guys do?

If i was a canadian.. i'd buy an 03 es or a ralliart.. i wouldnt buy an old evo.. the parts will be hard to find and will have to be shipped from overseas when u need something fixed (because the dealer most likely doesnt sell them) it just seems like a big headache to maintain an old Evo

buyer beware

did evo I and II come in left hand drive? i thought they were all RHDs

if i remember right, the first evo to be build left hand drive was evo III.

well, tough choice but if i were to choose i'll get an evo III. there are engine parts that are available to share from eclipse/ talon engines but not all are same though.

go for the evo III!

well, good luck on your choice.

If you guys want to import a 'classic' RHD car to drive in Canada, I know a guy that can do it for next to nothing.

And if I'm not mistaken, all generation of Evos were powered by the awesome 4G63, so parts aren't really that rare for it. It's basically the same engine.

by classic you mean 15 years+ old, right? I wanna get an R33 fo sure when they become legal, and I'm so tempted to get Evo I.

I'd say just wait, and then either get the lancer and use to money you've been saving to mod it up, or just get the evo 9 if it comes up here. An old evo will just end up being a big hassle. Yes it would be cool to own one, but parts would be hell to get, expensive and you could be facing other problems with it as well (safety issues, whether you can get good enough fuel for it away from the track etc.). Don't forget they have way higher octane gas in Japan so a japanese only vehicel could have a rich fuel requirement. Despite the myth, the 4g63 has gone over changes since it was first produced so its not as simple as just buying a part for the evo 8 and putting it in there.

Like ambystom01 said, fuel would be a pain. Most of those import vehicles run at a very high engine compression since high octane fuel is the norm. You may find yourself de-tuning the thing just so you can run it effectivly on a daily basis.

I'm not sure how the Evo I is setup, but thats always something to think about.

Not really. Cite Mitsubishi in the Decarie is able to get Evo parts without any real trouble. They maintain my Evo 8. And I know that they guys at Camo tuning (and other tuners) have worked on Evos as old as the Evo 3. Rally racing is prettyy popular up here and there are quite a few older Evos pounding the special stages.

i bought an oz and turbo charged it and it cost me less than an evo, but it doesn't compare to and evo 8. but it still feels good when you get a young punk that's in a civic roll up to you reving the engine and you smoke him by like 3-5 car and seeing there face. you can see it in there face and what there thinking (what the f*&ck was that, that not suppose to be turbo charged)
HAHAHA
