I just got my Evo on Friday and I'm doing everything I can to have it broken (800ish miles) in by the end of the weekend. After that, I will get the oil changed.

When can I bring it to the drag strip? Do most people wait until 2000 miles or so? I just want to do a couple test and tunes with it to see how fast it is, heh.

Also, how many people drag stock Evos, anyway?

I'd say anytime after its broken in you should be good to go! Don't worry about being stock cause your still going to be faster then most other cars there. Its all about improving your time anyway, not what the other guys is running.

I waited until 4k miles only because the track was closed during the winter. I went while stock just to see what I could do with no mods. In my only run, I got the time listed below. That was with a crappy 1.92 60', though, so it was capable of 13-flat or even 12.9x if launched properly.

 

Take your time for the car to be broken in properly. If you get on the car too soon it might cause you to have problems with it later.

 

I've already put ~370 gentle miles on it. I'm going to take it on the interstate for a good portion of tomorrow. Looks like I'll be able to take it to the dragstrip on Tuesday, woot.

Now I just need to decide on my launch technique, heh. I've never launched in AWD before. Should be interesting!

 

If you are trying to break it in I would avoid the interstate as much as possible..You want the revs to vary more then just cruising at 3krpms..City driving is the best for break in, in my opinion..

 

I waited until the car had 2000 miles on it before taking it to the track. Good luck and post up some numbers. Becareful with the stock clutch, they tend not to last to long when you drag race them.

 

Hmm, I've done a mixture of city and interstate driving. I have 801 miles now. I'm wondering if I should just hold off on tracking until I can get some more miles in.

Thing is, though, I'm leaving for Japan in 1 week, and I'll be gone for 8 weeks. I'd like to get a feel for how the Evo drives before I leave, but not at the expense of the powertrain's longevity (well, except the clutch, heh). This is a tough decision.

 

Your clutch should be seated just fine by now..I would think after about 3 or 4 times driving the car it would be seated since it is a pretty soft organic material..The clutch is pretty much the only drivetrain part that needs to be broken in, and even with that, break in should be very minimal since its about the equivelant of a big brake pad..

your good to go. I don't belive in much "engine breakin" theories. We take fresh engines to the dragstrip or dyno on the first day they run with less than 10 miles on them. They make the same compression as 5000mile break in engines. IMHO most engine breakin happens in the first 2 or 3 heat cycles.

I bought a new SRT4 in 03. picked the car up on monday, and it was at the dragstrip on friday night with 240 miles on it.

my evo I picked up on a wednsday (granted it was used with 17k on it), I had it at the track the following friday. missed the first friday becuase of rain.

I say take it to the track. going 8 weeks without having any fun with your brand new car would be horrendous.

Some much better 60' have been posted here... I'm still learning. You have to let the clutch out a lot faster than I thought, still getting used to that. If I can learn that I hope I can get into the 1.8 60' area.
