Not A Drag Car

You know its amazing to me to see how many people "Drag" race the EVO. I hear many times on the street from friends that drive EVO's how they lost to this person won to this person in little off the wall street contests...I keep telling my buddies, you know, you losing to that RX-7 or you losing to that Bimmer, and so on doesn't impress me at all. I keep trying to tell my friends that the EVO is not a drag car, I feel it is actually at a dissadvantage in a drag race, at least in the street sense. I continue to push that the EVO is a road course car, not a drag car. Now you may dissagree with me because some EVO's happen to be quite quick at the strip, but think abou it, the car was made for taking the turns, for road course's. I feel that Solo II where I want to play is going to be a more suitable place for the EVO than the drag strip. Not only will it be in its enviroment, but should be allot less stress on the car. For you guys that do race the Drags, like the guy racing the ZO6, I mean that is amazing, that impresses me because the Corvette is more suited for Drag racing than the EVO and for it to win, well, that is truly amanzing.....But beating a Corvette, a Viper, an M3 in a Solo II event to me, is just as sweet.........

3rd generation rx7s are a force to be reckoned with on a road course, i'd take one over an evo if it weren't for the maint. costs....

I like the fact that you can do scca events one weekend and drag racing the next, and don't have to change much about the car

Solo II sounds like fun. I've been thinking about getting into some competitive auto cross type events too, just not with an EVO.

As for dragging, I think a RWD drive car is more appropriate. You can still do it with the EVO though. And I do agree that the EVO is more of a road course/rally car, but RWD is also very good for the twists and turns too.

All in all, it's about what YOU want. If you like EVO's then that's what you should race. If you like Vettes then race those and so on. All the cars you mentioned are cool in my book and I wouldn't kick any of them out of my garage if I had them

Good luck in the Solo event bud.

I think you have got it backwards. In a standing start street race, an Evo has a great advantage over most cars. Streets aren't nearly as well prepared as most drag strips are and most people aren't driving around on drag slicks. AWD gives you the advanatage in these types of situation. But once you go to a drag strip, well prepared purpose built RWD cars rule.

drag racing is cheap... besides the breakin of parts of course.

i am definatly planning on hitting some track days (as many as i can afford)

but for the most part you can go to the strip a pay around $15 to race all night opposed to spending an estimated $250 for an open track day (Roebling Road in Savannah, GA)

don't know how much it costs in other places though... could be different prices where you live?

I bought my car because it's a sports car. Drag racing, autocross, road racing, rally, it does it all. I drag and solo11 my car and its a blast. As far as track racing goes, go to scca and go to their events, 25 bucks for the day. Even on a short track you still get about 30 seconds seat time. Do the math $20 for 11-13 seconds at a time. or $30 for aprox 30 seconds plus you get to turn, brake and accel.
Whatever you do just have fun with the car thats why we got them right.

Yeah you definitely are very, very, very, very, V E R Y wrong. I use to drag race an AWD 1st gen talon, and let me tell you that I have done my share of street racing as well (I am not endorsing such a childish activity however). The EVO is proven road racing platform, but also makes for a very good drag racing platform despite its grotesque curb weight. This is ESPECIALLY true on the street where you will find most two wheel drive vehicles NOT USING SLICKS (yeah thats right, your 1600 HP Nova is useless with street radials). EVO's and other high powered awd vehicles have a tremendous advantage in drag racing due to their immense amount of constant traction. You can argue against this advantage, saying that the extra weight of the awd drivetrain is not worth the time saved during launch. To those people, I say visit this webpage:
