0-3 counts of knock - ECU advances timing (more power)
4-7 counts of knock - ECU maintains timing (no change)
8+ counts of knock - ECU retards timing (less power)

Knock itself isn't bad...it's normal. Excessive knock causes timing to be pulled, which reduces power. How do you know what your AFR is anyway? Do you have a wideband logging device? You shouldn't try to tune your AFR by adjusting boost...it should be done with a tuning device, but I know you aren't able to do that right now with just a flash.
Knock = Pinging =Detonating=preingnition= lean or running too hot. Unless you talking about bearing knocking which bad as well

Seriously though, is the track really slow, because you guys should be trapping higher than what you are trapping at.

Oh, hmm, well thanks for straightening that out. Why do people experience heavy knock with subsequent timing pull when running rich then? When I'm running at .95v or .97v at a certain rpm, my timing suffers. When I get rid of the richness and run at a more optimal AFR, I get a very smooth timing advance with no lulls.

How would knock while running rich equate to being lean? And how do lean engines run extremely well right before they blow up if they are knocking? Help me understand, because I must have it all mixed up.

Maybe its more missing firing than what most people refer to knocking.

If you are running too much timing & boost (ie too much heat) for the octane, then it will ping (preignited) no matter how rich it is running.

In terms of my questions, that doesn't help me much. My example is that in stock form, my MR ran very rich (like all Evos). When logging it, I had very low AFR readings after 5200rpm, especially above 6k, and my timing stayed almost flat without advancing. As far as I knew, that was a result of knock. That's the standard way I've always heard it referred to...you run too rich so you knock and timing gets pulled. To remedy this, I removed fuel to run leaner than stock. The closer I got to a good AFR, the more timing I received in return (stock boost still). When I got all the rpm ranges at a healthy AFR, I had a smooth, almost linear increase in timing advance up to a max of 20 near redline.

How does this scenario equate to knock being caused by lean conditions as opposed to rich ones? Does this go back to your suggestion on "missing firing"? I haven't heard of that as the reasoning before, but if you're right, I'd like to know for sure, because it means I have no idea what I'm doing despite the HP gains, solid AFR, and solid timing advance. If it's random luck, then I'd like to know before I break something...

Why do you say I was knocking alot? I thought a rich AFR kept detonation down?

My clutch is aftermarket, but Im not sure which, I bought the car used, probably an ACT single plate though.

I thought about just increasing my boost until I got to around 11.3 but then I was worried about not knowing how much I was knocking, so I decided not to.
i dont think u could get enough boost out of the stock turbo for 11.3 with the mods u got on the car iv been told the stock turbo is good to only about 22-23psi max anything above that is just heat and its out of its efficiency range

He's talking about an 11.3 AFR...

I don't know that much about datalogging Evo in terms of software. Usually when a computer is pulling back timing you be noticing a spike that being is slowing ramped out. I thought about why you getting more timing now and their is chance that its due the S-AFC. This is a signal modifer and perhaps by tricking the ECM that your using less air, their a chance that triggering code to add more timing.

How does the trap speed look for my mods?

I'm wondering if my flash is too conservative, and if I should switch tuners.
