Evo IX Launch Methods

Posting this up since i'm new to AWD and i'm not quite sure how to launch correctly in this thing. So far i can kind of launch @4k with the clutch pre-loaded and feathed out.

@what rpm should i be launching at and how should i go about doing so?

Try the stock 5k limiter. Do a little search, you'll find a lot of info. Good luck.

4k is way too low - kills the clutch from too much slipping. 5k would be the minimum, but 5500-6000 is usually optimum. Yes, if you had searched, you would have alreday gotten tons of info on this. I personally have posted multiple threads with vids showing how to do it...

remove the res. pill from the slave cylinder and put on a ss clutch line. This will help you out a great deal with your launching and save you slipping the life out of it while learning your launch techniques. It will feel better for everyday driving also.

Clutch in, rev to 6k (if not using the factory limiter at 5k) 100% throttle, pull up ebrake thumb pressed in and holding, SLIGHTLY let off clutch and use the ebrake keep the car from moving (to preload the clutch and driveline), drop the ebrake and release clutch at the SAME time whilst 100% throttl'ing your car. Should cut some decent 60'.

Not sure why people think they need to use the e-brake. It's not necessary at all. You can pre-load the drivetrain and clutch without using the e-brake. That just complicates things and wears out the e-brake unnecessarily.

talk about over working and not a real good way to launch the car. to preload all do you is lift your foot off the clutch until the car rocks a lil then just leave it there. a couple time practicing and you will know where the sweet spot is in your clutch.

Thanks for all the info...i guess I am still used to my Si and launching lower and I didn't know about the 5k rev limiter/launch assist (if even is called an "assist"). Also, yes I did search for "launch" and I dug through for a while before posting but much of it was junk.

One more question since i'm a total AWD "noob" so please excuse. When shifting, I drop the clutch (again used to my honda and comp. stage 4 clutch) and I hear my diff locking up...how bad is that? I just need to get used to giving more gas first i spose...

There is a reason people running in 8's use this method. ALSO notice how I said if you're NOT using the factory limiter to bounce off of.

ive driven many of them...best way i got it down is push the gas down let it bounce off the 2 step ...when the 2nd light gets on or around their let the clutch out a little till u feel it wanting to move when u do that on the 3rd light just let the clutch go and ur off...ive cut 1.67-1.74 60's from that...it might just be the driver but yea

I only found one thread that you posted that was specifically about launching (with a vid), but the site hosting the video was 404 for me. I've read enough of your posts to have the general concept down, and I've seen some of your drag vids, but I would still be interested in seeing a specific vid on launching if you have one still hosted somewhere. =)

Just search for all threads I've started, and you'll see. There's a vid of me launching at the track and running a 12.000 (no launch control), and another vid of me showing how to use the 6k rpm 2-step launch control (not at a track). Just look at all threads started by Warrtalon.

Incognito, we don't have 8 seconds cars - we don't need to use our e-brake. Even without the 2-step, there is no need for it. The vid I referenced above shows me cutting a 1.66 with a pre-load feather technique en route to a 12.000 on stock cams. Do not use the e-brake.

Sav, i don't know what you mean by dumping the clutch when shifting. You can only dump the clutch when launching. After that, you just shift as fast as human possible, preferably without lifting off the gas if you can, but that is not required for going fast. You do not hear your diff "locking up." You hear the driveshaft hitting the rear carrier bearing.
