Best way to launch...
Ok, so i have a 03 evo with a ACT racing clutch. I always launch it at around 3.5k, but i dont think im doing really good at lauching the car. I mean, i wanna launch it good, but i also dont want to mess up anything in the car, such as the clutch and so on. Whats the best way to launch the car without damaging any parts??
At what rpms?? and is it better to let go off the clutch slowly or just let it go at once?
Please post techniques if you have any also.
Thank you.
3.5k wont do it, need to be around 5k-6 depending on mods, you will break something doing it repeditively wihtout upgrading drivetrain
since you have 03 you dont have launch control. stock evo 9's have launch limiter at 5k and thats stock

Your Post
Wow, you are opening up a can of worms here, that is like asking "what kind of oil should I use" and what your asking is a good question though. This all varies with experience and your car. Personally have a "racing" clutch on a daily driven car is a mistake to me. Unless your car is like making big HP numbers IMO that clutch is not necessary. Now your car is going to re act differently than other 8 simply for that alone. Most "drag" racers wind the crap out of the car, more like 5-6k rpm clutch drops and get slingshotted out of the hole, a 3.5k rpm launch is very conservitive. I would recomend getting a re flash and have if possible a launch limiter put on like the IX's have, it kinda makes the car "idiot" proof from really messing things up, unless you have some real skills. You need to change your fluids more often too if your driving hard like that, but thats common sense. Bottom line, you abuse it, it may break, so just "learn" it. You should be able to slip that race clutch way more than you could on a stock clutch so maybe try that, I am not a fan of BAM throw the clutch down and floor it...Never would do it on my car, and if you got the $$$ to repair broken trannies or transfer cases all power to you, just slip the clutch slightly and go, it will wear the clutch on a standard clutch but a racing clutch should of been made to do this...Right guys and gals? Lets help this guy out......Hope my ten cents help a little? Just be careful and be safe...and please watch out for the PO PO dang man they love EVO Drivers haha.
I have launch control on my '03. You can get a 2 step launch control by having someone flash your ECU. Mine is set at 5900 rpms and I launch from that. I haven't had any issues. The easiest way to launch your car is to hold the RPM's somewhere around 5500-6000 and let the clutch out just until the car moves (puts your drivetrain under load). Then, dump the clutch and floor it. It only takes a few times to learn how. If you are smelling clutch then you are letting it out too slow.
I want to take my car to the track this weekend. But im trying to find out the best way to launch it so i dont make myself look stupid by a bad launch neither i want to brake anything in the car because i dont have any spare money for repairs.. lol

Do you know anyone thats close to you with a tactrix cable? I would try and find out and then use it to set your stationary rev limiter to a useful area instead of like the 7900 or something the 03s have it. Like others have said 3500 is way to low. Set it atleast at 5k and play around to find the best settings for your driving style
Uh, disaster waiting to happen here.
1) Why did you not search before trying to launch and before making this post? Did you think tihs had not been discussed a million times? Did you think you were the first to have this same question? Come on, now...
2) Why do you call it a "racing" clutch? ACT makes a bunch of clutches. Which one do you have?
3) Why do you have a "racing" clutch on a stock Evo?
4) Why are you even trying to launch the car if you don't have money to fix things? You could easily break your transmission and/or t-case and be out close to $5k after one launch. You shouldn't even be CONSIDERING such a thing if you are that worried about repairs. There is no way to launch that won't potentially blow up everything in your drivetrain, even the best launch methods. The only method that is sure not to break anything is a non-launch, which is a waste at the drag strip.
5) You shouldn't be launching below 5500rpm ever.

+1
welllllllllllll the easiest way i've found to launch is to use the factory 2 step. if you don't have one, get one.
my launch method:
Step 1: Push in the clutch
Step 2: Put the car in first while still holding the clutch to the floor
Step 3: Let the clutch pedal out slowly until you feel the engagement point.
Step 4: Once you've found where it engages, keep the pedal pretty much right there so you can come off the clutch the way you need to.
Step 5: Floor it. Just hold the gas pedal to the floor and let the boost build
Step 6: With the gas pedal still firmly planted on the floor, slowly let out the clutch until you feel it grab, then let go. it shouldn't take long for it to grab since you already have the clutch pedal waiting close to the engagement point.
Important thing to remember: once you floor the gas pedal, you shouldn't let up until you shift into 2nd gear.
another tip: if racing in 45* weather, make sure not to run tire pressures of 48psi/44psi, soften up your coilovers a bit, and do all you can to avoid the water box... otherwise you'll end up with 1.86 60' times lol
That's how i've always launched the car using the 5k rpm 1st gear limiter and it was good for 12 second passes. hope that helps.
