2nd trip to the strip--please critique results

My wife has an Evo IX SE. A local company in our area called RaceLegal hosts 1/8th mile events at QualComm Stadium (where the Chargers play). The track setup is widely known to be pretty poor, and only those with slicks or DRs are hooking-up well. I first took my wife's Evo out there late last year and managed a best time of 8.0x with the following mods:

AMS 3" downpipe
AMS 3" test-pipe
AMS 3" exhaust
AEM short ram intake
Nisei IC and piping
Hallman MBC
Walbro 255
Alain-tuned on 91 octane

About a month ago we had the following mods done:

Cosworth 272s
SuperTech dual valve springs and titanium retainers
ARP headstuds
WOT-ported OEM exhaust manifold
WOT-ported OEM 10.5 hotside

Back on the 8th of February I went to an event and managed the following time:

This time was performed with the aforementioned mods, 91 octane, and 28psi on all 4 corners. I don't think I can run much quicker given the current mods. I might be able to cut the 60' by a very small margin and shift quicker, but I think she is running about as quick as she is going to.

Thoughts?

nice trap but you could probably be running a 7.6x with a better 60'

the 91-octane is killing you though, how much boost?

How would you suggest that I better the 60'? The two-step is currently set at 5500. The stock tires don't seem to like anything less than 28psi as I tried lowering it even further and the 60' got worse. Boost is set at 23psi and tapers to 21psi.

mine is set to 6000rpms and i typically have 25psi in my tires. On points nights i pull 1.6s and on test and tunes when the prep sucks i pull 1.7s. Sadly it's tough to get runs in on most points nights.

I've gone as low as 21psi in my tires to try to cut down on the spin on the crappy nights.

Are you on stock tires? I can try dropping the psi more and raising the 2-step, but raising the 2-step and keeping the psi at the same level will only cause more spin.

How much boost are you making at launch? I am making about 10psi.

i see 11psi on my launches. I pull the same times on my volks/falken 615s as I pulled with my stock enkeis/advans so that hasn't been much of a factor. Just hold the clutch to the point where you feel the car tense up, 2-step it, and let the clutch out in a quick but controlled manner, don't dump it.

I haven't been dumping (i.e., side-stepping) the clutch--I have been slipping it. I think the primary concern here is track preps. There is another track in my area which is a dedicated 1/8th mile track, and is said to be very nice. I have yet to go there as I am a little bit concerned as to something breaking when and if I hook-up really well.

these cars are pretty stout, i've launched mine a couple hundred times by now, only thing i've had to replace was the stock clutch.

I would say work on your 60ft time and you will run in the 7.7 high 7.6 area. Don't side step the clutch, keep slipping it, it takes time to get it right, but there is a certain way to do it that allows you to launch nicely without burning up the clutch or sending a shockwave through the drivetrain like side stepping does.

To give a reference point I managed to get 7.81 in my best 1/8 mile at 88.4mph, that translated into a 1/4 mile run of 12.21 @112mph, my 60ft on that run was 1.70.

Like I said don't side step it but also don't burn the hell out of it, try to get a feel of when you have loaded up the drivetrain and then slip it really fast!!!

Yes, the Evo is pretty stout, but like every other car there is a breaking point. The guy who tunes my wife's Evo broke his t-case a few months ago at this track. His most significant mod was a FP green and he was running race gas. He was making about 425hp. The t-case failed during his 1st to 2nd shift!

A number of factors contribute to parts failing. My wife and I cannot really afford to her Evo breaking as my turbo S2K is already on jack stands.

Very nice advice! I know that one of the biggest factors in any car competition is the "nut behind the wheel", and I am sure that my driving skills need some improvement.

I used to race at the Q, and i agree with you about the track prep. Have you tried Barona? Track prep is way better! With what you have done i think you could see 7.6's for sure at the Q though. I ran consistent 7.7 at 91 with 1.78 60 ft, and this was done with stock cams. I always ran 26 psi in the stock yoko's.

No, I haven't tried Barona yet. I will try lowering the tire pressure even more and see what happens.

This is website for barona: www.baronadrags.com. What rpm are you shifting at when you race?

My 1.6s on the stock tires were done at 22-24psi. Lowering your tire pressure isn't what made your 60's go down necessarily. If they're spinning, you lower the pressure. If not, then you work on the launch technique. However, we're talking about a concrete or asphalt parking lot, right? They don't have a real launch surface with VHT, I'm assuming.

Anyway, I'll be racing there on Mar 15/16 during the SCCA National Tour event, but because of that, I don't think they'll conduct the Street Legal drags unless it's in a different portion of the parking lot. Otherwise, I'd give it a shot to give you and others a frame of reference, since I've raced at many tracks and multiple altitudes, so I pretty much know where I stand. In lieu of this, I may try to hit up Fontana on Friday night - the 14th - since I'll already be in town.
