First time ever at the track in the Evo
First time ever at the track in the Evo
So I went to the track last night and watched some of the locals run. There was an SRT-4 that was loud as hell but ran consistent 14's. A WS-6 was running mid 13's but had horrible traction issues. I decided to run the car since it was such a slow night (no pun intended).
Now, the last time I've ran a car down the track was in 2002 and I've never drag raced (or launched) an Evo before. I didn't NLTS and I used a 5000 RPM 2-step with an 8000 RPM rev limiter.
The car is currently putting down 330 HP @ 6500 RPM with 330 ft/lbs @ 4500 RPM. Full interior, full weight, street tires with full tire pressure, running on 93 octane. Obviously I need to learn how to leave the tree again, but I don't plan on drag racing this car very often.
Anyway, here are my times.

I've actually tossed the idea around of building a drag / track car. It certainly wouldn't be what I'm currently driving. I'd probably pick up a 2006 RS and go to work on it.

I went back to the drag strip last night. The only chances I had made to my car was I finally got rid of the crappy tires and replaced them with some Dunlop Z1 Star Specs. There was mostly old muscle out there but a couple of imports. My first run they lined me up against this car...Slicks, supercharger sticking out of the hood, cage, and a cam that was so aggressive that my car's MAF was getting all screwed up and trying to stall the car while I was sitting next to him. Not only that, but when the lights dropped it was a pro tree. I was expecting a sportsman tree so I had an R/T of somewhere around .600. It bogged a bit on the 5000 RPM launch and I had a hell of a time reeling the car in. I crossed the line at 12.6 @ 111 MPH. The other car ran a 11.9 @ 117. I needed to raise the 2 step and not get caught sleeping at the light.
I raised the 2 step to 5500 to help spin the tires more on the launch and eliminate the nose dive. My second run was against a brand new BMW 335i. I have heard all this talk about how strong those cars are, so I was a bit worried about this run. I think I screwed us both up because I was expecting a pro tree the second time around so I left when I saw the first amber, as did he. Unfortunately it was a sportsman tree and we both left under a red light. I quickly pulled ahead and stayed there until the 2-3 shift. I missed third (cleanly) and had to wait a second for the RPM to drop before I could get it back in gear without a mess. He almost caught up, but as soon as I went back on the throttle, he went back into my rear view mirror. My 12.8 @ 108 to his 13.8 @ 101 shows that I really needed to pay attention if I wanted to beat this guy by bus lengths. 60 foot time was down to 1.78, so I thought I would leave it there for the rest of the night and see if I could get consistent 1.75s.
The rest of the night was uneventful. I continued to run high 1.7 second 60 foot times and mid 12 second passes against 14-15 second Mustangs / a 350z / Something is off with my tune. I tried adjusting it a bit for the strip and ended up getting a lot of hesitation after shifts. I would shift up, release clutch, go WOT, and 0I could feel the linkage load up but the car would fall on its face for a split second before coming to life. I think I'm going to load my street tune map back in it and just play with the 2 step tomorrow and see if I can get it back to low 1.7 second 60 foot times with consistent low 12 second passes.
I'm not much on drag racing nowadays, but it's still a bit of fun. My favorite part is that this car is completely full weight. I don't worry about the level of the gas tank, I don't take out the spare, I don't lower tire pressure or remove crash bars. I'm not mocking people that do. I'm just saying that it's so much fun to me that I can bring a true daily driver to the track and not remove ANYTHING at all and run down (some) cars that are towed to the track, and beat everything that I've went up against that is driven to the track.

Yesterday was a bore at the strip. The only cars I lined up against were a Lexus SC-whatever-the-Supra-is-without-the-2JZ-motor-thing, and a couple of the new Dodge Chargers. The only one that was any bit of a challenge was this orange Charger. He red lighted on the launch but it ended up being my 12.65 @ 108 to his 12.70 @ 117. I'm pretty sure he was spraying because every other Charger (including an SRT-8 that was at the strip that day) was running 14s, and they all had stock mufflers hanging off the back. Either way, another 50 feet of road and he would have had me by multiple lengths. He came flying by me right after the line and I honestly thought I had been taken until I got the time slip. I struggled to put down anything near the same times as earlier (12.3s) and I kept hearing people complaining about the wind and how their car is not running right because of this or that. Whatever.
