Time for slicks or Drag radials??

So I went to the local 1/8 mile track last night. I wanted to try and get a technique down for launching for the shootout. I feel I have a pretty good technique, but I spin so much out of first. I still get out of the hole pretty good, but it affects my 1-2 shift. I cant ever get a good 1-2 shift at the track. On the street I can rip on it and get some nice 1-2 shifts. The best I could do last night were 1.8 60fts

Here is a video, if it helps at all. I am running 255/40/17 potenza re760 tires at oem pressures. I think lowering some pressure may help.

You can definitely try lowering the pressure in your tires. I'm in the same boat as you, but at the shootout yesterday, I dropped the pressure in my tires down to 28psi, from 36psi and dropped a tenth of a second. My 60' time went from a 1.9 to 1.7 from lowering my tire pressure.

I was still spinning, but I pulled a 1.7 60' time with all-season tires. I know I need better tires.

Well from the sounds of 2.3 pump gas. The car has much left in it, what you have you might want to get some slicks. If you don't compete and you just want to have fun its always good to get slicks but you might break things because of how well they grip. I personally got DR Hoosier and I like them but not really as good as I thought they would be. Not much into competition but will attend from time to time.

Slicks are awesome, DR's are good. Both can help you find other weak links in your driveline

Ok, so I ran at the shootout, and again I was kinda dissapointed.

I think with my current tire size(255/40/17) and the horrible short gears of the evo 9 trans, its killing me. That with not revving past 8k on my stroker too.

I managed a best of 11.6@ 116mph. I felt the car should be getting 120+traps and low 11et's. I know I need more practice of course too.

My 60fts arent that bad, with 1.7's being the average. Occasionally I get a 1.6 or 1.8.

The 16"Hoosiers QTP's on some RX7 rims are really good. They are soft and not hard on the drive tran. Regular street tires like to wheel hop which is not good. Thats how I killed my first T-case. The nitto 555r's suck big time.

i say seat time dude. i know you know it, but it's so important. you have about the same HP and TQ as me (on paper you have more). I ran at the shootout on 255/35-17 street tires, with a best 60ft of 1.8, and I ran a two 10.9's back to back. 2 weeks ago my best was an 11.6, so seat time seat time seat time, will be your biggest help.

will say your trap seems low though. if you datalog, look at your shift times. there is so much time to make up all over the track, and practice will get you that time.

tsidrift1, I think I meant you before but I'm not sure. Anyways, I'm having the same issues as you are spinning out so much on first. Like the other gentlemen said...more seat time....something I don't have lately.

Yes, that's right. Good memory there. I didn't realize that until I read your sig but it was the TB you had at the meet right?

So what tires did you decide to go with?

Yea, I had a black one then. I havnt gotten any new tires as of yet. I am still throwing out the idea of getting fd wheels with some hoosier qtps.

I'm in the same boat man. I blow the tires off in first gear and I need to work on my shifts. 2.1 60ft 12.04@122mph, 97mph in the 1/8. I just picked up a set of 93 FD wheels for 250$. I just need the 22mm spacers and QTPs and I'm ready to go Also trying to go aem and get a e85 tune never ends......
