best way to launch a Evo?
Whats the best way to launch a Evo without damaging your clutch for a stock car? By letting off the clutch slowly or just dropping it? I would think dropping it would damage the clutch quite fast.
honestly the best launch (at least in my opinion and test)....is to slip the clutch about a 1/3 to 1/2 up, pull the e-brake (just enought to keep the car from moving), and rev your engine to about 6500 rpms. then just drop the rest of the clutch and release the brake and mash the gas.
ya pretty high for rpms and not to great for the clutch but u will not get any tire spin. just be prepared to shot off like a rocket. the key to the slippage is to do it at the last possible moment so u dont wear on the clutch too much.
doin this on the track got me a 13.51 on a stock car. i've also tried other launch tricks. u know lower rpms with slippage, dumping the clutch at high and low rpms. the way i describe before worked the best for me. but as they say "to each, their own" so just find a nice safe spot clear of traffic, with enough stopping distance to practice a launch. what works for me might not work for u.

I ran my car 4 time and never stopping. they just waved me through and I never smelled my clutch. I basically just rev the car to the desired rpm (6500) and when the light goes I just let the clutch out. Kinda hard to describe it, but I just don't drop it. I let it out almost like I would be normally taking off in a way.
The main thing is you don't want to spin your tires. If you do you'll end up bogging once they get grip. You also want to make sure you are launching high enough or you'll bog and the car will fall on its face. Just picture you letting the clutchout just right to where the car basically just rolls off the line. It will take practice, but once you get the hang of it you should be okay.
BTW...I have almost 26,000 miles on the stock clutch.

6500? You guys are nuts! No wonder people sizzle the OEM clutch so easily. Low 1.70s are achievable with a 5000rpm walk out. Just takes a little finesse and practice. A guy that lives a bit South of me cuts mid 1.6x on his stock clutch with only a turbo-back and a reflash!
? 5000rpm on 1.7?
I think I got 0.22 with 7000 slip.
Clutch burnt a bit, but it was a such a rush, because I'm already boosting at 10psi before the car even moves.
That's with already slipping clutch.
it's really not how fast you go, but just getting the launch right to get a good R/T. From what I heard and from my small but insightful experience at the track.

You can launch in boost as low as 4500rpm. But you need 5000 to get a good short time.
As far as reaction times, I don't care about them as they don't effect your numbers. I'm not a bracket racer; I'd rather run test and tune for a couple passes then leave.

Noise what have you gotten out of your 1+ at the track. As far as launching on the stock clutch i guess its subjective. Everybodies experience is a lil different and so are the launching pads at tracks.
My clutch burns (smells) no matter how much I slip or do not slip the clutch at launch. If I dump it or slip it, it burns. Anywere from 4000-6000...burn smell. I guess I suck at launching AWD cars.
Do you guys have the stock restrictor in line with your clutches? Noize->Do you?

the first 2 times I launched my car I got clutch smell. the last 3 out of 4 at the dragstrip I haven't gotten any smell. the 4 time I got just a small hint of clutch. but I also bogged becuase I spun a tid bit. Evil have you ever taken your car up to union hill. I can't get my car to turn a go 60ft for nothing. 4 trys and the best I've gotten is 1.92. I'm gonna go up to beach bend and try up there. everyone says you'll run 2 or 3 tenths fast up there. it's a lot better preped track.

from my expirence and some other people:
1) stock clutch? just dump it from around 4,500 if its on track 5,5.
why? because you will burn the clutch! i got 23K on my car still stock clutch...
2) if you are running aftermarket clutch like ACT 2600 you have to slip it
because the clutch is little bit more agressive.
thats all.

I suggest about a 5000rpm dump on the stock clutch, as attempting to slip launch the stock clutch will just spin and not grab untill second gear.
It seems abusive, but slipping the stock clutch and it not locking up untill the 1-2 shift probobly does as much damage to the clutch as the dump.
I don't belive anyone has broken a stock clutch disk yet from the shock of the dump, but LOTS of guys have worn the disk down from slip launching in short amount of time.
