I heard someone talk about how they get better gas mileage shifting at 3500 rather than 3000. Can anyone verify this?

i dont know but i never really look at the tach. i usually shift on the sound of the engine when i am daily driving. when the music is on too loud then when i feel that burst of speed coming from when the turbo kicks in then i shift. but when racing or driving hard i wont shift after 8000 even thought my limiter is 8400. all in how you feel.

and just as evo8rcr said, you knew when you bought the car that you would have poor gas mileage. thats the price you pay for a fast car. a faster car is gonna need some more juice.

get a daily driver if you are tryin to save gas, like a hybid or even just a plain or civic or accord. good on gas i got a civic and i fill up the tank about once every 10 days and i drive 20 miles to work everyday.

If the car is warmed-up, ~4,500RPM in first gear.

I try to shift under 4k for fuel economy but you know...it's a EVO so do that all the time is hard. I have to let loose sometime.

I usually shift at 3k for normal driving... For some reason, i've noticed i'm only getting around 170 miles this tank... odd because I did'nt smash on the car much at all... usually I get around 220.

The higher you rev it, the worse the mileage is going to be. (So long as you aren't bogging the engine down). 3k is plenty of rpm.

4k--i noticed if i shift at lower RPM than that, the car bogs and thus robs me of MPG
Even when i'm cruising at 3k RPM i dont shift up

Not necessarily true, especially for turbo cars or EVOs

If you shift at too low of RPM, engine's going to go out of ideal powerband, so when you try to accelerate, engine has to work harder (more gas used) to go into ideal RPM range

After 25k and 3 yrs of driving the car, I can say this from empirical observation

Here's a recent example to further verify the point

A week ago, I had to drive to Big Bear (mountain ski resort), which is around 120 miles away from my home for one way. So I filled up the car and left for Big Bear. It's around 80miles of highway driving and 40 or so miles of constant uphill, and trust me, I almost NEVER went below 3k RPM during the entire hlilclimb AND i was driving somewhat aggressively. Anyway, I was in neutral 50% of the time for downhill and as before, I never went below 3k RPM whenever I had to accelerate. So I headed back home and filled up the car to find I got---yep, 24 MPG.

Trust me--numerous times, I had 90% highway driving for one tank of gas and never have I reached 22 MPG b/c I was always too lazy to downshift when my RPM dipped below 2.75k RPM in 5th gear. However, now I get better MPG if I dont get RPM dip below 3k

STOP *****ing about gas milage--you didn't buy this car to get 35 MPG or whatever (or at least I would hope you didnt). Suck it up and learn how to drive turbo cars properly.

no matter

normal day:

warm up the car

1-2 2500
2-3 3000
3-4 2800 cruise on 4 35mph

i also noticed the gas mileage is pretty even whether you drive it crazy or not
i always got 22mpg... ok maybe if i went crazy for the whole tank i got 20.

but still 22 and 20 not much of a difference from normal to crazy

3000-3500 on first and second...3500-4000 in all the rest of the gears during normal driving. When I'm able to find open spaces during the commute, I'll take it up to 5500-6K just to make sure the Turbo is working
