need help on shifting
need help on shifting
went to the track for the first time in the evo today.every time i ran it was so hard to get into the gears especiall 2nd. is it because i'm trying to shift to hard.like i would shift into 2nd and it wouldnt go in right away so would i have to keep trying until it when in. there was no grinding so i dont think its the tranny.when i drive normal it goes in fine.would a short shifter and knob help. would driving slower help.have any of you had this problem at the track. thanks for any input.

sounds like the synchro is not enjoying what you're doing to it.
if the speeds of the car and the layshaft are very different, it just won't go in. if you keep doing it, you will wear out the snychromesh and will probably bugger up the dog teeth also.
either shift a little later (at a lowe speed) or blip the throttle between gears (see heel-toe or double clutching).
the best thing for you to do imo is work out if you really need to shift down to 2nd at the point you are doing it. what i mean is that a number of people get the idea that once they're on the brakes, they should shift down almost rightaway and that's a little silly. yes, engine braking helps a little but it shouldn't be the primary method of slowing down. if you down shift at the point where the speed and engine revs nearly match, you will get less wear and better times sicne the car won't bog down so much and you won't upset the cars balance.
if it's really not possible, you can blip the throttle with the side (or heel, whatever possible) while your clutch pedal is pressed in (during braking) to get the revs up so th synchomesh doesn't have to do so much work. however this takes a little practice.
double clutching is a little more involved.

okay well if the above 2 methods idnt seem to work, then let me ask you this...are you putting the shifter straight back? because all experienced drivers have discovered that trans. prefer shifting with slight pressuree slanting it 1degrre to the right(or passenger side of the car).

how many miles have you got on the odometer? tranny fluid change might help, I think. I think most evo's have problems 1st->2nd when cold and tranny fluids like bg (or whatever is popular among this forum, I use HKS cos I get it cheap) makes a difference when cold and that might do it when warm also... other than that.... afraid i can't help... sorry....
