Driving Impressions -- Sears Point and a wet Thunderhill in an Evo IX

I posted a couple of blog entries from recent track days in my Evo IX. Included is my own impressions of the driving technique a stock-suspension car seems to want in order to be fast. Check it out, and I'd love to hear other people's thoughts:

BMW CCA Driving School at Sears Point - November 4-5, 2006

Wet Test Day at Thunderhill - November 13, 2006

Enjoy!

What the Evo wants is a slow-in, fast-out approach. You need to get all of your braking done in a straight line and be careful not to carry too much speed into the turn in. You’ve got to be back on the throttle right from the turn-in point of the corner so that all four wheels are pushing the car through. With the stock suspension the car still wants to understeer, but by approaching the corner like that I have found that you can make all 4 wheels slide (which allows you to track through the corner) and you can also use additional throttle application to make the rear of the car “tuck-in” and tighten up your line. This literally is 180-degrees different from any BMW I have ever driven, so it’s taken some time to reset my brain.

thats my driving style!!! lol

cheers! good reading material!

great write up. I just got finished with the porsche driving experience and learned alot. I've had the evo on one track day, and am waiting till march to do another. I think i'll try your suggested style of driving.
