Driving on a hill

I have been driving my manual trans ra for a couple years now (first manual trans car) so I am still a little new to driving on hills and such. I got stuck in traffic in a parking garage going up and almost backed into someone last night. I had to use the ebrake and shift trick.

Any advice or suggestions for accelerating from a dead stop on a steep hill?

Thanks

a couple of years? and u never encountered a hill?
i just know exactly where my clutch starts to engage so i release to that point just before a solid grab and give it a little throttle

use the ebrake, or just have a quick transition from brake to gas? get the clutch halfway out so you don't have to worry about that.

You would have to know your car pretty well to get going on a steep hill without backing up too much. I usually let go of my clutch quickly right up to the point it would catch and at the same time step on the gas. If you don't know the engagement point very well, you can stall the car or just press the gas and go nowhere.

This used to be difficult for me too when I started out. What I do now is foot on the brake and slowly let out the clutch until the car stops rolling back. Then I gas and go.

Like everybody else said...

your best bet is while you're stopped on the hill, with a foot on the brake, slowly let out the clutch until you feel it start to grab. Hold this position until its time to go, release the brake and give normal gas as you release the clutch.

by letting the clutch out to that point it should begin to engage 1st gear which will prevent yu from rolling back as much.

Also remember to do it slowly. Just because your on a hill, doesnt mean you need to pop the clutch out and jam on the accelerator. Then your bound to stall, buck your car like crazy, or crash. Keep practicing. Find hills on back roads where you can safely practice without other cars or traffic.

Yea this way was the only successful way last night. I had to ask the idiot behind to back up bc I was a little less than an inch from backing into him. Driving a manual has taught me to give plenty amount of space b/w the driver in front of me and myself when stopped-especially on a hill

Just keep practicing in order to get the feel of where your clutch kicks in. The more often you do it, the better you'll get.

i have to drive hills everyday. i live right next to mountains and my school is on the side of it

i just know where my clutch ingages, i put the pedal right before that point rev up to about 2k and go. its not really hard just takes getting used to.

plus if they get to close and you roll back into them its their fault and you could get a jdm rear so either way its all good ha
