Safe RPM to launch
Safe RPM to launch
Just finished breaking in new evo, now ready to drive a little harder. Have been reading alot about clutch problems. Any ideas on a safe PRM to consistantly take off from without hurting clutch. I drive the car on a daily 40 mile commute and want it to last but have to hold my own at the stoplight dragstrips. Thanks
there's no 'safe' rpm level if you want to perform 'stoplight' drag races...You launch, you eventually wear that thing down! Most are either taking care of the stock clutch, or purchasing an aftermarket...

the best RPM to launch from is 1k
anything above 3k will wear down the clutch slowly but surely
save up for your clutch fund when you start draggin
if you want the best Drag launch, you'll be aiming for 5-6k launch with a quick slip, not too much... that gets me consistant 1.8 60's, best 60 is 1.81

here is a few dumb questions. If you get the after market clutch and your original is shot will the dealer put the new clutch in under warrenty. Is the clutch even under warrenty? Should I find a shop that will do it instead of bringing it back to the dealership?
Clutch is a wear item.
Personally, I don't want a bunch of monkeys who do oil changes on Monteros and Galants all day long coming near my Evo, especially for a clutch job, warranty or not. I've seen too many botched warranty jobs and I'd rather pay out of pocket knowing that it'll be done right.
Find a competent local shop for the job, or DIY, it shouldn't be too bad. I think I'm going to go for the Exedy twin plate, but have to drive a car with one to see if I like the engagement or not.

I launch at 4K and will drop to a 3-3.5K and go to a steady 4K and off I go. But I rarely do that. I usually go MAX 2K if I want a lil more power off the line. Normal driving, nothing over 1K. More like 900rpm

As said above, there is no "safe" RPM to launch from. But doesn't it hurt the trans and not the clutch? But anyway, people do launch sometimes, so if you're doing it occasionally and not at every single stop light, you will be ok, but just start saving up for some trans parts earlier than most other daily drivers.
