drag racing

just wondering. when you guys are drag racing and pounding the gas. what RPM do you find is the fastest to shift at. i usually shift past redline alittle bit. around 7200. was just wondering if that's slower faster etc. because i have friends with cars that **** before redline because they dont have much power afterwards so it slows them down. on another note. when i shift i get a really hard jerk. i heard this is also slower and it is better to smooth it out. is this also true? thanks for reading.

Don't own an evo, but if I had a car that ****s before redline, I'd take it back to the dealer...

I've been trying to break my car - and me, the driver - in nicely in my first 2.5 months in my Evo. I'm waiting for the winter to end and autocross/driving schools so I know the car better - I've never had this much power and competence under my *** before!

Anyway, I can only answer here as a STOCK Evo with little experience - and my answer is really a question!

The most pull seems to be from around 3500 'til about 5K from there the accelleration rate seems to diminish. This makes me wonder whether shifting EARLIER will get me back on a higher accelleration rate. I'm used to a car that generates all it's power at highest RPMs so I'd not shift 'til almost fuel cut-off. The ***-dyno in my Evo makes me beg the question about shifting early.

So, I'm interested in this thread immensely! Someone smarter than me armed with dynos in all gears should be able to answer this!

Otherwise, a question I have, is whether anyone has tried to shift hard and fast and gotten a 'pop' from the rear diff with each shift when the clutch is released while hitting the gas. It's an audbile pop and I've only done it the once, but...

Thanks all!

Well since I got my car Dynoflashed and the new rev limit, I shift around 7200RPMs. I did gain the most whp up there due to the dynoflash

WTF??? If I had a car the redlined before it reached it's max hp, I'd take THAT back the dealer... or rebuild the engine. What good is having a max hp at an RPM where the engine is expected to explode?

Anyway, see if you can find dyno charts of Evos modded similarly to yours, and see where the max hp is, you want to shift around that point (I thought you'd want to shift a little later to stay in the main part of the curve, but drag racers seem to disagree with me, and I'm not a drag racer)

I read (I think in Sport Compact Car or some such mag) to shift so that the next gear lands at peak torque. I do not drag race and know nothing about it.

I read that too, but I'm pretty sure it was to shift to fall into peak hp, for peak torque you'd have to do some granny shiftin

I would say to look at your dyno graph, or someone elses with similar mods, and shift so that throughout (sp?) the gear you have the best AVERAGE hp. Since I don't have an evo, I don't know how much the revs change after you shift, but let's say after every gear change you fall 2000 rpm. Well just find the 2000 rpm on your dyno graph that have the highest average hp and you should be able to rough in the best shift point.

You want to shift near your peak wheel torque. This takes into consideration gearing since it behaves like a torque multiplier. Depending on gearing (ratios), the optimal shift point will vary. Hope that makes sense kinda....

so what's the case in a stock evo? should i be shifting early so i can build max boost or push the gears until redline. redlining is the only way i know since ive always used my rsx-s at the drags. this whole turbo thing is still new to me

Would you want to shift right at the peak wheel torque or a little after so as to put the RPM band right back to where the peak torque number is building again? By this theory you should be shifting well before redline as the torque is already falling at this point, correct? If this is the case (and I am not arguing for or against) then it would make sence to be tuning for torque numbers instead of outright HP numbers, which does make sence in a way. There are so many ways to be looking at all of this.

Seems like in theory, shifting between max torque and HP, keeps the engine rpm's in the sweet spot, which from my understandeing is between 3500-6500 rpm's.

I shift at redline 7200... I've tried lower at 6800 and 7000 resulting in slower ET's
