Case study # 99 - Typhoon Nightmares and Solutions
Here is a customer who is not a evolutionm member but surfs the web site from time to time
His mods are 2005 RS
Typhoon Intake
3 " RMR down pipe
STOCK CAT AND CAT BACK
Custom Dyno Flash
I have been saying that the K & N Typhhon sucks for a long time and yet people keep buying it
Here is is base run
I thought he must have a major problem with this weak power comming in
I ordered a boost leak test and a compression test which were both a waste of time

With nothing wrong on the car mechanically it was time to try some tuning
Here is the results with the base dyno flash
Even with the boost controlling flash the boost was still falling down a lot - no doubt due to the typhoon intake
Not bad for a base flash but still less than some stock cars make
I suggested the new Forge UNOS MBC which was then intalled

Here is the final tune after a few adjustments in a/f and timing - ready to take it out for a final road tune and adjustment with the new data logging dyno flash
I was amazed with the gains !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The forge unos MBC rocks - the boost is holding 20 psi at red line
21 psi peak
93 octane

A few months ago in Dsport I beleive, they tested the typhoon and actually gained like 10whp from it. Now, I know you've had bad results with the K&N, but can it really be that much different from some other intakes out there? Or is there some correlation between low power cars and typhoons.
Hey, i have this typhoon intake and i lost big hp as well.. only pulled 209 AWHP, and 237 AWTQ... i just received my Hallman PRO RX MBC, and im waiting for exhaust... once i get these things done, those are the kinds of gains you can do for me with a custom flash? if so im not so upset anymore that i have the typhoon.. and ill be dealing with you...

Looks like a smooth graph after the tune. So I take it you can get decent numbers with this intake after a good tune? I've had the Typhoon for over a year with an AFC II and seems to be OK besides the occasional stalling. Do you recommend the Forge MBC over the Hallman?
K&N is total crap... Had it on my 05 evo for like 2 months. Car could not hold boost... ran like sh** had Al Flash my ECU and it still ran like sh**. Pulled it off slapped on a HKS RS intake and instantly had incredible power. Dynoflash worked great on HKS RS... But K&N is junk!!!!! It’s still sitting in pieces on my garage floor... think I’m going to take it out back and blow it up!!!!!
There is a metal flange inside of the Intake pipe on the K&N... I don’t know why its there... maybe to spin the air? Typhoon???? But, I bet if you break that flange out the intake will work better... my HKS RS has no stupid flange.
I took that half moon out on my typhoid and still ran like crap.....i spoke to the techs at K&N and they said maybe i put the MAS upside down.....yeah.
I sent it back to K&N and they actually gave me a refund, and i didnt even buy it from them!
You would think that a company with their resources could come up with a better intake than that.

that graph was completely off the wall....
question though....i'm not doubting that the K&N sucks...but what makes it so much different than other intakes that yield good results......it's basically a pipe and a filter....yes?
