Very worry about the dealer

Al,

My car is at the Mitsubishi Dealership having my clutch kit put in. The service advisor told me that they MUST clear my code(CEL).

I told him that the CEL is because I don't have a cat. He insisted that he must read/clear the codes and reflash them because it is the Mistubishi policy. He says that in order to retain my warranty I must reflash the codes.

I can't afford having my custom flash being delete for a stock Mitsubishi flash.

Do you think they are really going to reflash it to stock or are they going to just clear the codes.

I told him I will bring my 3"HF tomorrow morning so that they can install it and clear my CEL.

What do you guys think? would it just clear my CEL or wuld they put my ECU back to stock?

I wish to know this ASAP. Please someone could clarify this to me?
The reason why I don't know all this first hand is because I am mechanicly oriented and I do my regular maintenace on my own and I haven't taken my car to the dealer not a single time since I bought it back in early Oct 04

Thanks!!

Carlos

I have had a code/cel read and cleared at Mitsu but told the Service Manager NOT to reflash the entire ECU. He said no problem = I had no problem

Make sure that they are just clearing the code and NOT reflashing the entire ECU. Plus . . . . . why don't you just have them unplug the negative on the battery, install your HF cat and see if the code goes back? or are they not up for that?

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I appreciate your quick response. To be hoonest, I void taking my car to the dealer for many reasons, one of the reasons is because they try to get the most money of you.

Per instance, the Service adviser wants me to do a full oil change, I just told him I replace my oil not even 500 miles ago, he insist that the labor is covered uner the warranty but them the oil and oil filter is expensive as hell.

He also wants me to change the Air conditioning polen filter, he inist is neccesary.

I am really pissed, I am not a freaking noobie, I went to a vocational mechanical school in Europe for 4 years from 1988-1992, I never finish the 5th year because I ended having to go to the Army in 93. I know what they are trying to do, they want just money from service, whatever service, it does not matter, they just want service money.

It is ridiculous, I am taking the car for a clutch job and now I have to deal with oil change, polen filter, cat, CEL reflash, etc, etc, etc

I hate taking the car to the dealer at all.

I think that items like brake pads and clutch, tires they fall under normal wear and tear, in other words they are not within the warranty.

That's terrible. I hope everything works out.

But yeah . . . . how did you get the clutch fixed under warranty? Or are you just having them put it in?

your car should have come with pit pass which includes 12 oil changes for free, and changing the air conditioner filter if part of the pit pass maintenance...they should change your oil and the air filter without charging you anything...and to clear the CEL disconect the negative battery terminal for a couple of minutes...i've had it done at the dealer before without them having to do anything to the ecu...you can do it yourself and install the HFC so the CEL won't come back on...

Do you have any friends with an OBD-II reader? If so take that to the dealership and hook it up to your car and clear your own code. The device is 69.99 at most automotive places. I always have one in my car and you can turn off your CEL when need be. Hope this helps a little.

Having putting a clutch for free in my car is not going to fly. I am having them put a Exedy Twin disc which I brought it in.

I know I can clear the code myself by disconneting the battery for a minute or so also I could have my cat install. The iisue here is that the service manager insist that my codes MUST be cleared because of the warranty policy.

Basicly no matter how silly the engine light is they have to cover their own A S S, they say that in the past people have accused them of CEL failures so from now on they are clearing the codes.

Back to the main question. Do you guys think it would affect my custom tunning?, I hope not.

I'd be more worried about the aftermarket clutch voiding any kind of warranty you have on the tranny. Unless the dealership said it was cool. Which I doubt.

No issue at all . . . . . . as long as they ONLY clear the code. I had my Mitsu Dealership here do it. No problems and nothing happened to my Dynoflashed ECU.

Just tell them not to REPROGRAM the ECU (they shouldn't, they have no reason to)

That is what I don't get it about this whole thing. I mean, Cmon, I am rolling on my MR to the service department, my car has a 25"intercooler core that takes the entire front(hard to miss), then I have the big 5" tip from my 3" Greddy exhaust, the moment you open the hood you can see all kinds of mods from Header, to air filter to upper intercooler pipes etc, etc.

Like I mentioned before, they know I have mods, they are just trying to play the game of convencing me to spend more money insinuating that they will cover my warranty if I spend the money on stuff like polen filter, another synthetic oil change, etc...
