Case Study - Stock IX Fuel Pump

Recently, I had a customer who posted a dyno sheet from a eflash tune I had made which looked odd to me as it was going lean towards 7,000 rpms

We are taling about a car with a down pipe - intake and evc ebc - 2006 IX.

I decided to offer him a refund on the eflash if he would get a custom tune when I was in LA as I suspected that he had a weak stock fuel pump

Some quick addition of injector duty cycle in the higher rpm zone had no effect on the a/f at 7,000 and beyond

I maxed out the fuel map after 7,000 and the car was still going lean on the high rpm zone

You can see from the attached data log that the fuel is going lean despite the fuel map being maxed out

Obviously the stock fuel pump is over heating and the flow is not able to keep up with damands

Now ALL I did was install the Walbro fuel pump - BTW I discovred that the stock pump was hot as heck when I removed it

Look at what effect the walbro pump has on the a/f - with the same map settings now there is enough fuel to dump the a/f super rich at 7,000 rpms and above

Sounds like a faulty fuel pump or a leaking FPR line.

You should not have trouble at ONLY 19-20psi.

In this case, the pump WOULD be working hard, but the FPR line would not be forcing the pressure through the injectors. If you are logging boost I am assuming you tapped the FPR line. Maybe it was not a good connection?

Al you need to work on your image resizing skills. This is very hard to navigate for members and I have a 17" monitor.

A few more adjustments later and we have a nice stable 11.1/1 a/f with repeatable and constant fuel delivery pass after pass

This is why no one who is modifying an evo should neglect a fuel pump upgrade as part of the package

Thanks

AL

I agree - we have seen many stock pumps fail

The problem is that they do not fail by stopping to work 100% - they fail by slowly loosing pressure

From what I have seen - hot climates and low fuel levels are aggrivating factors

This may be a dumb question, but what if your stock and just had a flash.. do you still recommend a fuel pump upgrade?

It would richen your tune, lose some power, but would be safe. Tuning FOR ot WITHOUT the pump are different programs.

Your AFR is fine. You likely have too much ignition timing which will contribute to high knocksums.

There is not enough samples to dissect your log.

Minimize evoscan while logging and/or get a faster computer. Should be in the 88 samples/second range.
