exhaust popping

I got a custom tune and reflash when Al was at AMS back in March. The car is running great and I'm happy with my reflash.

But since that day my exhaust pops every once in a while. It's not too loud, just like a quick exhaust fart and usually when I lift off the gas. I don't even know if the reflash has anything to do with it but I don't remember hearing it before then.

I don't have any CELs and like I said, the car is running ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS.

I was just wondering what causes those "exhaust farts" and whether or not it's something to worry about and/or fix.

Al? anyone?

I am going to try and organize a trip to AMS for the first week in June - if I have sufficent interest - so I can go over your car then for free

OR remember Martin at ams is one of the best in teh buisness so you can always have him look over the car

Your poping sound MAY be related to an exhuast leak

When the car is cold - jack it up - then start it in neutral and feel about the exhuast pipes and see if you can feel any leaks

Thanks Al

I'll look around for any exhaust leaks. It's a new RMR exhaust installed by the guys at AMS so I'm fairly sure it's not leaking but you never know, I guess.

You did have some problems getting the O2 sensor off remember? Think it might be related?

I have the RMR exhaust and it pops, too. I don't think it's an exhaust leak - I think it has to do with excess backpressure in the area between the resonators. The way to test it is to give it gas, then lift quickly - listen for the "pop pop" sound. If it doesn't do it, gas it, lift, lightly gas it and lift again... Works every time.

I like it - gives it that WRC flavor...

I've only experienced this a couple of times in almost one year of running the RMR catback but I agree, I believe it may have something to do with backpressure build up between the two resonators, man do I love this exhaust, one of the best sounding/looking in my opinion.

Ah - good idea - that may indeed be the case

I have the RMR Downpipe and cat-back with the stock cat.

I haven't been able to reproduce the pops at will. I just kind of happens sometimes and I haven't figured a pattern. I'll try doing what Chris said and see if I can reproduce it.

This is what I was talking about when I described how to do it. I am running the DP and catback with the stock cat, btw. I don't think of it as a problem - I like it...

It only happens at low rpms, too.

yeah that seems to be the general consensus. This is some feedback I got from another source:

"Nothing needs to be fixed perse, but if you had a standalone, you could probably "manage" it out if it really bothered you The stock ECU should have parameters for decel fuel cutoff and it may take a second to completely shut off the injectors, especially if it has a decay rather than hard shut off. On the AEM for instance, I have mine set pretty tight to shut off totally with more than 10in/Hg vacuum (usually 14+), over 1500RPM with 0% TPS. I have no pops on decel, RMR turbo-back, no cat."
