Daily Driven E85??
Hey TJordan just FYI because I go to CO pretty often in the winter to snowboard I created a comprehensive Google Map of every E85 station in CO that is listed online. If you would like it PM me your email address, then you can DD E85 with confidence.
E85 conversion is definitely in my near future. I was planning on doing it this fall, but some unforseen house AC repairs came in and blew that up
My planned conversion is:
880cc injectors
Walbro pump
Apexi AVR-R boost controller
I plan on getting tuned for E85 and 93 oct, and having presets on the AVC-R for both. E85 can be problematic on road trips due to the lower MPG and rarity of stations, hence my desire to be able to run both.
As far as dealing with differing ethanol content in E85 seasonally, my plan is to use the ECU mod that flashes the CEL upon knock. If I see knocking with lower ethanol content, just take a couple psi off the boost in the AVC-R (another reason for running an EBC). From my research, it's possible that a little bit less Ethanol in the mix may not cause any harmful effects at all, as long as you aren't running so much boost that you're right under the auto-ignition threshold with true E85.
The only thing that bothers me a little is the burn rate issue. E85 burns real fast compared to gas. That is a good thing -- it means generally higher torque at higher RPM. But, it also means you have to run timing more conservative than gas. So when ethanol content goes down, say to E70, it's burning slower and you start losing power on the top end. The question is, do you go to the trouble of re-tuning seasonally to take out fuel and add timing in the winter?

I've been reading a lot of these E85 threads, because I'm going to be doing it myself, and the one thing that they all have in common are that everyone that's going to be running E85 is going with 1000cc injectors. It's not overkill.

To be honest the cold start thing really isn't a big deal (to me at least) my car takes about 20 seconds to start in the morning and drives like total $hit for a few minutes, but isn't it worth it?
Its been hitting low 40's here in Oregon and according to the owner of my local e85 station the ethanol content of his gas doesn't change in the winter.

I haven't done anything intentional to assist cold start, and I haven't had problems on 72% ethanol down to 6*.. It will usually take two tries when I use my remote start cause it leaves the clutch engaged (fires up then dies, stays running 2nd start). Starting with the clutch pushed in it always starts and stays running fine.
I think something must be wrong with startup fueling on these cars that have problems at 40*

You *could* run the tank empty, switch maps on the ECU or EMS, or the parameters on a piggyback, and re-fill with regular gasoline. Don't get me wrong, it's less than convenient, and I understand your concern completely. fuel content detection and auto- map-switching stock ECU is also under development, which will simplify this greatly.
