E85 - First timer, observations on mpg.
E85 - First timer, observations on mpg.
Well I made the plunge to the world of E85, after the raving reviews my friend danl gave me the temptation was to great to put it off any longer. The following are my observations from my first (2) full tanks of the good stuff....also note here in Pittsburgh, Pa were on our winter blend so its probably around E70.
- First tank...rescaled injectors and all was a go. I did countless wot pulls the entire tank because it was to much fun plus was getting everything dialed in. In the end my mpg came out to 17.5ish, not to bad considering I was wot and city driving most of the tank.
- Second tank....as hard as it was for me to do I didn't go wot once, mostly highway and some stop/go + had to go over 2 mts (stayed out of boost 90% of the time).....In the end my mpg came out to 19.7, I was shocked that the difference between city/wot and almost all highway/no wot was so close. I know on gasoline the difference of the (2) types of driving would have been much greater. I avg. 27 mpg highway and usually if i do a good tuning session and some thrashing i get about 20 mpg to a tank.
- Also it dropped into the 30's here and my mpg even on straight gasoline suffers when it gets cold (roughly 2-3 mpg) so that could have factored into it much more. As my first tank was in 50 deg weather.....this is when PA sucks. I am very happy though and doubt I can ever go back to 93 octane, both fill-ups cost me about 23.00 each (I cant remember the last time i paid 1.99 / gallon). The power is more fun than I have ever had in the car - my 850's are at 93% IDC on e70 but I have FIC 1050's on the way.
- Finally one thing I have noticed (catless): During normal driving shifting at 2500/3000 rpms I have noticed the car backfires between shifts much more than it ever did on gas...has anyone else noticed this? my trims are all good and I did have an issue with a malfunctioning map switch which I fixed this weekend. Thought maybe that was causing me issues but it is still there....not that I'm worried just an observation i was curious if anyone else had??
Sorry for the long post but thanks to those that read it

my car does this as well, only on e85 im guessing there is a way to tune it out, havent found it yet. watching the wideband, it goes very rich at let off (slow driving, normal) and stutters then grabs the openloop values and climbs back to 14.7...
i need to recheck but do not think i have any leaks or other mechanical issues.

Travis, tell the truth. If I didn't have 5 gallons with your name on it the other weekend you'd still be a viewer to this forum and not a poster.
I'm at about 150miles to my first half a tank on this fillup of E85. Thats about what I get out of gas. Its really not that bad. For some reason I don't get any misfires slow shifting on my 1150's from FIC.

I think they are partial throttle driving around and getting a rich condition causing a pop, not so much a backfire. Travman is just a little whiney ***** with sand in his vagina and it bothers him.
