Mod advice sought on E85

Mrs. Jim in Tucson says the EVO is already "too loud". And, she has the unmitigated gall to say the car is too quick, so "it hurts her neck" when I accelerate.

Now, a good question would be: If you had the low-tech Spark Tech COP, would there be a difference in going from 28psi to 32psi?
In other words, is the fact that you saw no increase in power going from 28psi to 32psi due to the turbo running out of mojo, or due to an alleged weak OEM ignition? Ummmmm!

My dream set-up would be a 2.6 stroker, IX turbo, on E85.

The go fast bits deceptor pro BOV is the first and only blow off valve to have an in car remote control to switch from silent to loud or anywhere in between. One flick of a switch in your EVO, will turn the noise up or down.
Our Non-cdi 4 individual High Powered COP WILL add 8-10whp simply by switching from factory coils. It was proven in back to back dyno testing on a very lightly modded Evo 8.
There is a BIG misconception that there is NO power to be had in a more powerful ignition system. EVERY and ALL of our testing has proven that theory WRONG. Along with a cleaner power band there are also the driveblilty benifits. With a plug gap at .018 and even heard of some people running .015, the cars low speed driveability suffers drastically. There is also proof of less knock with a properly engineered system. A car doesn't have to exhibit misfire to benefit from more ignition energy.
Stay tuned as we will be heading back to the dyno and will post ignition logs, comparing stock coils vs non-cdi vs Pro-cdi systems.

There are plenty of 400-500 HP Evo's on stock ignition as far as I can read.

PS every car I have ever owned that gets modified has had an ignition upgrade of sorts except this one (yet) unless you count colder plugs. An Accel or MSD coil with plugs and wires on a V8 has netted 4-8 HP (4 on one car and around 7-8 on the other) not unlike your COP for the Evo.

Yes, I have heard of this. I need to do more research. I must say that with the consistent mild flutter I've experienced with my IX DV, I'm skeptical of both the Works and Dejon items. I'm sure they will hold the higher pressures; my concern is the drivability. And now that I have a small collection of these things I'm even less inclined to expand said collection.


I would say give the Tial "bong" bov or the dejon stop leak kit a try..My bov sure leaks like crazy above 25psi...I get the flutter just like you...Might give you a few hp and a psi or 2 up top with the high boost you are running..On a side not I did not see an increase in power from 28-33psi on the dyno either, but the torque sure as hell went up lol

lol I can relate but If I'm not mistaken this is what Razorlab runs and Tons of DSM'ers.
If your current stock valve is not holding the higher boost anyway what do you really have to lose by trying this mod. It's definitely cheaper than yet another BOV
LOL I just remembered I have a Agency Power valve that I traded parts in a package deal with someone to try out. I really didn't want it but figured I'd help the dude out and I can prolly sell it on ebay if/when I try it and it doesn't work out.
I have been running 29-30 psi (#65 pill limited) for 5k miles so far and others much longer/more psi as posted. (cheapest power increase if YOUR car reacts positive to more boost)
I have always wondered how many head gaskets blew due to too much boost and at what PSI that is not to mention how much knock was present.
I will get headstuds if/when headgasket blows as IMO to install studs properly the head should be pulled anyway. If gasket blows hope I catch it before any possible overheating lol

No, no, I was not inferring that there were any ignition issues with your specific EVO. However, according to Spark Tech ALL EVOs suffer from weak ignition, at least in the high RPM range.
I was asking, if the inherent ignition weakness in your car was removed, would there have been a difference in your power going from 28psi to 32psi?

My take is that you can never have too much of an ignition system. I've found out on my previous cars that I could always run a a wider gap and was able to richen up my A/R a bit when I upgraded my ignition. It would always be good for about a tenth and 1 mph in the 1/4 mile for me. Closing the gaps on your spark plugs to me is just a way of dealing with the inefficiencies of your present ignition system if you are misfiring. Now presently I'm on the the stock ignition system running Denso spark plugs gapped at 0.25. So far with a 50/50 mix of water/alcohol on 91 octane, I have no misfires what so ever. As soon as I could afford it I would like to upgrade my ignition system and see what it will do. I'll be hopefully be doing a change to E-85 soon and am curious to see what my ignition system will do then.
