That said, are any of you guys out there getting away with a battery that has lower cca's than stock while running e85?

edit - This is for an STi, so tuning suggestions won't be of much help.
if you crank it that much i wouldn't suggest a mini battery kit then.

My reply still applies even if it's a subaru. The startup maps need better tuning. Subarus have cranking IPW adder tables just like the Evo.

They are actually a bit better in the Subaru as they have multiple Cranking Fuel IPW Comp tables. MAP, Throttle, RPM, IAT and ECT.

What do your current IPW adder tables look like? I only have to crank my car once for startup in similar temps to you, although I only have 1100 cc FIC injectors.

I have both E85 and an small BATT, I have to start me car every day or i'll have to jump it. BTW the temp here only gets to low 30's(on average), it was worse when the temp dropped for those 2 weeks. I had trouble starting my car those two weeks it was in the teens.

If you are not pushing the car hard in the winter and you think your tune if safe enough- why not add 1 gal of premium NL to the tank to raise the vapor pressure of the fuel and slightly richen the tune (open loop) by doing so? A small amount of gas can raise vapor pressure (RVP) from the approx 6 lb of summer blend to perhaps 7.5 lbs or more depending on what type of gas is in your area. This will not do as much for you if you are running winter grade E70 (up north) but if you have summer grade E85 in the tank- it can help. Don't do this if your tune is on the ragged edge (you are near detonation) and are going WOT- however- if you study this paper; http://delphi.com/pdf/techpapers/2010-01-0619.pdf on table 2 you will find that research and motor octanes change very little clear down to E50 (due to cooling effects) and one may be safer than assumed.

As a comparison- pump grade gasolines run about 7.5-9 lbs RVP in summer and 12-15 lb RVP winter (varies by EPA/State regions). This is varied to make starting easier (and gas cheaper) in winter but lower boiling/ evap emissions in summer. Pure E98 has an RVP of 2.3 #.

I don't understand you guys with mini bat problems. I have min-bats in both my Mitsus and they are fine in teens to triple digits. Both on E85.

If I plan to have a car sit for more then a week or so, I disconnect the battery. But a couple days just sitting and it will still start up fine...

What mini-bats are you guys using?

Both my Mitsus see this in the winter and start up fine, E85 + mini-bat.
