Super caked up injector 20k miles on just e85

I told my brother to pull his injectors every 6 months just to check. He started to have some very strange afr issues. I will let the video show the rest, but damn I have never seen anything like that.

I am starting to wonder if this is less of an issue with the fuel....and more of an issue with fuel storage at the gas stations. I've never had this issue and it kinda seems like a regional issue too. That's crazy.

Yes. He does have a catch can setup.

We were doing some tuning, and I could not get the afrs to dial in. As soon as I had them clean, they would fall out of wack. I felt like I was chasing my tail. So I was like I will not touch your car until you pull those injectors and check them. 20k miles and 2 years of straight e85, from the same pump in Ontario California. I use the same pump for my evo so my injectors are coming out this weekend. I might send them off for cleaning just for the hell of it.

Wow I've never seen anything like that before. I've heard of E85 gumming up but not to this degree. After every third E85 fill up I fill up the car with a couple gallons of 91 to flush everything out.

Is he pulling on the crankcase with manifold vacuum, i.e., using a PCV setup?

I think the OP didn't understand you first question. It is an important clue in this case.

Running the stock PVC setup with an aftermarket catch can. The vent from the catch can is recirculated back to the intake pre turbo. In the video can see the setup.

Perfect chance to test this out! Try running the car with the same fuel but without the recirculating gas to the intake pre turbo. Then report back after a few more tanks.

Likely cause is the PIB cleaning agent in the gas component of E85

(Yes, flush the system w/a tank or 2 of 91-93)

Cut & paste here from our Gunk thread:

PIB is designed to soften engine deposits, but below a certain concentration (by total fuel volume) it is actually counter-productive. What happens is that with insufficient PIB by volume, the normal valve deposits don't soften. The PIB actually combines with these normally occurring deposits and makes build up worse.

Brother is on walbro 255hp with the sock that comes with it for an STI application.

I am running dual walbro 416 e85 pumps with some mustang socks.

No other filters for us, and both of our cars are 100% e85. I think I have only had my car on 91oct once in the last 4 years and that is because I was going to Europe for 7 weeks, and I just pumped all the e85 out, flushed with 91oct so injectors would not freeze up. After I got back pumped the 2 gallons of 91oct out and e85 went back in.

Yes I pulled mine and they were fine. There was zero build up on my injectors.

That is nuts! I have a Supra and have run E85 for years. In fact all of my Supra buddies have. We have FIC 1100, 2150 etc. I pulled mine out after years of straight E85 use and they looked brand new. Had them tested and they flowed like new.

We live in southern California. Our ethanol has been perfect at 84-85% year round. Is it possible this is an environmental problem?
