Trying to figure out my next steps in trouble shooting. Any help is rally appreciated.
Background: 2005 evo 8 built motor from MAP (was tuned for 93 and FP green turbo previously for around 2k miles). Took the car down a second time to send the transmission out for rebuild. While waiting for the transmission, I decided to revamp the fuel system and switch to an FP black.
Events leading to the problem. During the rebuild my tuner recommend using a specific ethanol gauge sensor, as listed in the title it’s the innovate kit. I bought and followed the tuners and instructions from innovate on the install. (Note: I have good amount of experience on these cars. I’ve torn down and rebuilt multiple cars on just about every level.) With that said I’m not an expert on all things evo. Case and point the flex fuel kit is a first for me.
The actual issue. As stated, the sensor and gauge are installed, I asked questions if I needed to during the instal, it seems fairly straightforward.
Ran the fuel lines through the sensor, no issues. Routed the wiring harness through the firewall to the gauge, no issues. I did have multiple questions on the wire instal to the ecu, but again, it seemed pretty basic. I’ll attach the diagrams to the bottom of this post. But from the tuner and the instructions the yellow wire, off the gauge harness runs to pin out number 42 on the ecu. I bought the actual pin, the wire is not just crammed into the pin location. Also jumpered the power with one of the “add a fuse” jumpers.
Got the initial tune flashed it and started the car. It runs a little rough but solid rpm hold around 1k. The car currently has 93 in the tank so the gauge reads 9.7 which should be close. However I know have a flashing service engine light. And am unable to log ethanol in evo scan. Additionally, the car is NOT throwing any codes to account for the check engine light.
Talked to the tuner, and he said the light is due to the ecu not being able to read, or know what to do with the flex fuel kit. From his experience, this issue has only happened when the wire wasn’t connected to the ecu in the correct location. Also I determined the gauge still required software loading/programming, something I didn’t do before. Walked through the programming piece, seemed pretty simple. Still no resolution.
Logging: the other issue is my version of evo scan(2.9) did not have the ethanol % line to log. Now this may have been dumb, but I just changed one of the lines, octane content I think and changed all the parameters to mirror the tuners settings.. still no go.
any ideas on what I can check? I was think just to unplug the pin in the ecu to confirm it’s a flex fuel issue, out side of that I’m at a loss.
TIP: Ethanol content from the sensor can be read with Evoscan MUT request 83. Equation for stock settings is x/255*100
Your evoscan setup is wrong for logging to start. Does your gauge read accurately?

I figured the formula was wrong, but as stated above there was not option to log ethanol% that I saw. Can it be added? I see the parameters you list and the request number. I’ve never run into this issue before. But I had to reformat my lap top losing all the xml changes and log info for ecu flash and evo scan.
The gauge seems to be right, it’s listing 9.8 for the 93 octane, which should be pretty close.
That's because ethanol content needs added. Change the MUT request to 83 since that's where it's logging from. It'll never log properly if it's not getting it's info from the correct spot. Then change the formula. That'll get you logging properly but that wont fix your driveability concern.
oddly enough it works with that formula. I found the problem. Which is stupid, the damn wire popped out of pin 42. 🙄 it had to happen after the second time I checked it, because the first time it was good to go.
