removing phantom knock with thermal insulation.

If i recall correctly, i remember MJ an some other people mentioning they wrapped their DP with thermal insulation in areas they thought there was possibility of the DP hitting something.

i was wondering where would you buy thermal insulation that can withstand the heat of the DP?

i want to use it as a cushion on possible ding (metal on metal) areas.

i havent tried home depot yet, where did you guys get yours at?

why not fix where its hitting, you wrap it, it will wear through eventully..

Sometimes its not possible to fix correctly.. My downpipe for instance, the flange doesn't quite line up right.. I did however wrap the downpipe and crossbar with thermal insulation and it has not worn through. It should last for quite some time, at least long enough for me to replace the exhaust and downpipe in the near future.

Its not surprising that covering the sensor wouldn't do anything.. Any noise the sensor would be picking up is transmitted through the engine block anyway.. so whatever is making the noise would have to be either secured, fixed, or insulated from creating the noise in the first place.

Using an engine damper also helped reduce the downpipe rattle I had so I don't really need the insulation on the downpipe/crossbar anymore.

my question is, where did you buy the thermal insulator?

Different types of products by Thermotec.. S&K Speed here on Long Island is where I buy it locally, but they make adhesive pads of it, tubes of it, woven coverings of it, wraps of it.. You name it.. I used the adhesive version of it as its aluminized and holds it shape better, and since its smoother its less likely to wear of the two surfaces rubbed.. Its basically the same stuff you get a sheet of to place inside of your pretty stainless or titanium exhaust heat shield you can buy to dress up your engine bay.

I also used the stuff to cover my O2 sensor wiring harness and vacuum lines (in tube form) that ran near my exhaust from my Tial Wastegate.

You can also get a fiberglass blanket good to 800F continuous, like 4' X 6' for only $40 at welding supply - folded up 3X is perfect DP to oil pan insulation

Be careful, dont let something get caught in your driveshaft

Also keep in mind that you dont want to insulate the DP too good, this would give you boost taper to like 17psi. I didn't believe either until I experienced it - another lesson in thermal dynamics
