The load value you are talking about is based on a calculation that the ECU does and it is based on lots of info from various sensors on the car. Simply put, load is a measure of how hard the engine is working. While crusing at 60, the engine is under a lower load than at WOT in 5th gear.
So, after the ECU determines this load from various sensors, it then uses this value to determine many variables that tell the rest of the components on the car how to function.
For example, if you open one of the fuel maps in ECUFlash, you'll see that each cell in the table is connected to 3 values. RPM on the left, Load at the top, and then a number in the cell itself that represents the AFR. This means that the ECU determines the load, then makes a comparison of that value to the current RPM, and then determines the value of the variable ... in this case, the AFR.
Does that help?
