Wierd GM Boost Solenoid issue
Wierd GM Boost Solenoid issue
I never had this issue with the stock solenoid, but since using the GM Solenoid sometimes when I floor the throttle and boost comes on, I can hear the solenoid sounding like its skipping thru boost or something and it does not hit the target, and then If I get on it again right after it does not sound that way anymore and the boost just hits hard like normal where it should be. It just happens at random and I thought it was the solenoid, so I bought a brand new one and it does the same thing, I am starting to think that I should just vent the boost bleed to the atmosphere instead of the intake tube. I have clamps on every vacuum hose so I am lost on what it is. Has anyone had this happen or heard their solenoid do this? I installed it on a friends evo and it did the same thing on his, but it just happens randomly.
when it does not make this noise the car feels very fast, but everytime I hear the noise it seems the car is struggling to reach the boost target. Maybe I should just bleed to the atmostphere. I am going to try that today.
Try to datalog the car until you're able to log the even happening, then review it to see if there any clues. I don't think it matters if you vent to the atmosphere or not. I prefer plumbing it back into the intake.
Yea I know it is not suppose to matter, I have logged the car and I thought it was knock at first, I was like wth..then I looked at the log and showed 0 knock. Everything else seemed normal.
The only thing I can think is hooking up a voltmeter to the solenoid and reading it.
How did you install the solenoid?
I soldered resistor, and then I spliced the solenoid wires into the connectors wiring.
Also what method are you using the control boost?

I am using factory ecu boost control and I also installed the solenoid the same way you did. Maybe I need to try mrfreds patch and see what happens, but not sure if my rom was listed.

Do you have a JDM map sensor or something else?
Also if you're doing the boost control mod that MrFred put up where you change the WGDC correction interval, you need to change your boost error correction tables too.
Also are all your wiring connections protected from the outside world? Maybe a wire is shorting somewhere as you accelerate hard.

I have everything heatshrinked terminated. I am using a motorola 3bar sensor like the one Bez uses, but I had this issue before I put it on. I havent tried to use the boost control mod yet, I dont think it is available for my rom yet. Thanks for the help though Roger. Let me ask you did you solder your gm pigtail to your stock wiring, or did you use female male connectors? I have a few things I will try tomorrow redoing my upper intercooler pipe to so I can use the stock snorkel so I will see what happens.
I knew I was forgetting something. I used the supplied two-ended female connectors to crimp the pigtail to the solenoid.
Does it do this thing when the boost error table is zero'd out?
Now that I'm thinking more, you said you didn't have this issue with the stock solenoid. The GM and stock solenoids require different WGDC most likely, and the GM is more sensitive to adjustments so maybe you need to:
1. make sure your WGDC curve gets you your desired load curve
2. Do MrFred's boost control mod and use different boost error correction values.
For me it seems just changing WGDC + or - 1 changes PSI by 1-2.

This is more than likely the issue. I understand now, and it seems to be right, I guess I could try the 94170008 boost patch and see how it would work for my 94170014. I know 2byte load and byte airlflow is the same, but not sure on this boost mod.
I get that stutter sensation when the car overboosts (I think the EGR vacuum line was off when Bryan dynoed the car). By looking at my logs for my 100 tune, one cell is at 27psi and the next is at 25psi. The ECU might be compensating and quickly cutting things to meet the desired load or boost target (if the stutter is the same thing you're experiencing)
