how powerful of a laptop needed?

I am in the process of putting together a tuning package ie: laptop, usb/obd cable, sofware etc, and want to know how demanding is the software? How much ram, rom and what not do I need to have the computer run fast enought with the software, and to store maps. The reason I am asking is because I just got one of those sony vaio 9" screen laptops, and my cousin who is giving it to me tells me it is slow as hell. I told him I wont have any programs on it except loggin and tungin software, and he said it should be fine. Also the usb port is not usb 2.0 he said, will that make a difference? Thanks

I have an old P3 dell latitude. I dont even know the processor speed, it has 256MB of ram and like a 30gig HD. It is literally falling apart screw by screw, but I only use it for tuning. Works fine for me. Some times it is a bit slow, but overall not bad. The battery life is somewhat short but I get about 3 to 4 hours out of it usually, and I have the option to ditch the CDrom for a second battery........

I have a nice laptop for normal use, but with the dell, I dont have to worry about dropping it, running it over etc.

I had a ****ty laptop like that for a while (I mean my new ones still ****, but this one was as old as the hills) it served its purpose......just make sure when your logging, you only log the essentials and you should be alright

My logging/flashing tablet is a Fujitsu Stylistic 3500: 500MHz Celeron, 256MB of memory, and no peripherals except a touchscreen, running Windows 2000. Works great for the collection of logs and flashing, but I do analysis on a real computer.

If you can stick with Win2k rather than XP, and older versions of Evoscan (or Mitsulogger), it's very manageable, especially with a lighter-driven DC converter to overcome the rather weak battery.

I have probably 6-8 different laptops that I've aquired over the years, as long as it has enough memory and the O/S is not a memory hog, it'll work fine with all of the loggers and flashing tools.

The slowest laptop is a Sony Viao picturebook with a crusoe processor which works fine running XP, its the only one with less ram (256 if I recall) and it works fine. I also have several IBM 240x laptops of different CPU and Memory configurations, all of them work great.

So figure, anything with over 256mb ram, XP or windows 2000, working USB ports, 500mhz CPU (of any generation) or faster will get the job done.. The better displays give you more screen real estate..

You can find a good used tuning laptop for under $200 that will be well over these specs, and likely find someone you know with these specs (or even better) who would likely even give one away to you.

Honestly though, if your going to spend $300 for a used laptop, save another $200, and get a new one for $500-600 to use all the time, laptop technology has come a long way and are huge bargains for really nice machines.

Well the laptop isnt going to cost me anything now, my cousin is giving me his. It is a sony viao with a crusoe processor as well. i am going to wipe everything off of it, and only have the logging and tuning software on it.
